how the hell do you install this thing. i cant figure out how to separate the upper and lower halves of the shifter. the only other option is to slit it so it goes over the socket ball but that sorta defeats the point.

i tried a vise grip and channel locks but all i did was scratch it up

there should be a zip-tie around the bottom of the old one still on the car. cun the tie then slide the boot up as far as you can. then look down in there and you'll see an internal snap-ring, just pull out the snap ring and the shifter will come up out. just remove the old one install the new one and dont forget to put a new zip-tie around the bottom of the new boot

the shifters already out but the boot is to narrow to fit over the socket ball that goes into the transmission. the top and bottom of the shifter shaft must be screwed together but i dont know how to get enough leverage to unscrew em slide the thing on and screw em back together.

Sorry I didnt answer sooner but I was out of town this weekend. Well, you actually should have removed the shifter boot before removing the lever. I would suggest temporarily reinstalling the shift lever and unscrewing the knob. You may have to put some muscle into it but it will unscrew. Then once you do that the biggest pain is just betting a new zip-tie around the bottom portion of the boot. Hope this helps.......

I just put some gear oil to lube it up, and it slid over that ball on mine.
