ok so i bought a 93 240sx, everythings nice except for one thing.

there was what i thought a battery drain in the system. I took it out to a local automotive place and got it checked, alternator is good, starter is good, its just the entire engine harness is screwed. some gay asian [ricer guy, no offense to asians out there because im asian too but damn you guys[azn] tick me off.] anyways he had the nerve to mess with the electrical system himself.

but anyways the shop told me i need an entire new engine harness.

i have a question though, isn't it the lower engine harness that deals with the charging of the car and starting?

- also what does the top harness control?

please help me out.

thanks!

Uh screw that shop.If they could actually track it down to the lower engine harness, then why couldn't they find the wire that was causing the short..

Do you know how to use a volt-ohm-meter?Put a clamp meter around your battery cable with your car off.Turn the meter to measure amps. You shouldn't be drawing barely any..If you are (seeing current draw), then pull fuses 1 by one until the amp drops to almost zero. The circuit for that fuse that you pulled which caused the current draw to drop is where the short is located. Simply trace those wires using a FSM, or just replace all the wires in that circuit and you should be good to go.

Check some simple things too, like your glove box light, trunk light etc. My friend with a Saturn had the same problem, until he realized his trunk light switch was broken so it was always on.

The harnesses go-to all sorts of things, they aren't divided by the system they go to, just the physical location they go-to.

The dude probably installed a stereo or something in a half-*** manner and when he removed it he left wires dangling so there is a "short" somewhere. But it's "barely" a short or else it would blow the fuse..

Double check all your door switches etc...Maybe even pull the light bulbs out the trunk light/glove light, and all the lights that light up the inside and see if your battery still drains..

The other option is to goto a pull-a-part and get another lower engine harness from a junkyard car and swap it..

Another option (not really practical unless your a baller or work in certain industries) is to get a IR/Thermal camera and look at the different parts of your car. Where-ever the short is happening should be warmer then the surrounding area. (I really just threw this shop in here for fun, as I doubt you have access to one of these.)
