I am changing timing chains on my 93' 240SX, ka24de. I have removed the top cover and just finished disconnecting all of the hardware and hoses etc.. from the lower front cover. I removed the front oil pan bolts and loosened the ones on the side of the pan. I am not able to get the lower cover off. It separates about 1/8" on the top and right side and I can wiggle it a little from side to side but it will not totally separate from the block. I don't think I left anything attached that sholud be off. I double checked all the bolts that mount the cover and as far as I can see everything is off. If you can shed any light on a method of getting this darn thing off it would be a great help!

Did you drop the oil pan? I was having the exact same trouble a couple days ago. Take all the bolts out of the oil pan, first remove the front ones(which you have done) then take the braces that help hold the transmission/engine together(about 8 14mm bolts in total, you will see these towards the back of the oil pan blocking 2 bolts in the back and maybe one on the passanger side). Now support the engine with a jack and a peice of wood by jacking it up where the transmission meets the engine(next to the braces, and make sure to put them back on before you jack up your engine) and then unbolt both motor mounts on either side, driver side is a tad bit harder than passanger. Some people say only the passanger, and I would try that first and see if it works, but it didn't for me. Now you will need to unbolt the remaining 10mm bolts that hold the oil pan off, then it should hopefully fall down. Still not out of the fire yet, as there are 2 12(?) mm bolts you need to unbolt from the oil pump. You see, the reason it is stuck is because your oil pump is mounted on the inside of your front cover, and the pump has an oil pickup that goes way down into your oil pan. If you get the 2 bolts holding the oil pickup off of the oil pump, then check and make sure you have all the bolts loose(and by the sound of it, you do) and then pry it off. hope i helped

Thanks for your reply.I knew something was happening in there that was stopping the cover from coming off. I had several sources of info about the timing chain change out but none of the said the oil pan had to be completely removed.Got the tools ready for tomorrow morning, I'll deal with a couple of cold ones right now.I appreciate you responding so quickly.

Hehe no problem. You will need a 1/4 inch drive socket, with about a 6' long 1/4 extension for the back bolts as the pan is too close to the transmission to get a 3/8's socket in there.

And I learned this info from other nico members on a thread I started about a week ago ^_^But it does work, I proved it by taking my off yesterday :p

The front cover is OFF! This is no easy task. I removed the braces, undid the oil pan bolts, put the braces back on,dropped the sway bar, took off the engine mount nuts and raised the engine. The pan does not come completely out from under the engine, but theres enough room to get the oil pickup bolts off and the cover removed. I also had to remove the heat shield, power steering pump and A/C comressor so the cover would clear the mounting bracket for the A/C tensioner pulley. Thanks for the info, it helped alot. Now we get to start changing the chains, tensioners and guides.Putting it all back together will be just as fun.Good luck with your work!
