Hi all A few days ago I had a shop change the transmission cooler lines,,, metal... on my 2001 QX4--They also repaired a sensor so it would pass inspection,, the told me to take the car and put 50 miles on it and bring it back so codes would be clear,,to inspect ...I drove the QX4 about 9 miles and decided I better check theTrans fluid,I didn't see any on the stick..so I drove it home and parked it. I proceeded to read up on proper way to check the fluid..then I drove for about 10 minutes to get it warm.. and checked again.. no sign of fluid, I then drove it to the shop and said check the fluid.. they did,, it was low two quarts and a little more..they poured it In..I drove the Qx4 only about 20 miles before finding this all out .DID I damage the transmisson???

During those 20 miles: *Any* problems with how it shifted? And was it flat, any steep hills?

No. For a drain and fill it is 4 qts; total capacity is 9 qts. So you were at 1/2 capacity of what is normally in the sump, much is what is there so the pickup is never dry irrespective of what extreme angle the vehicle may be at. Based on what you wrote about the terrain driven, it would be better if no hills, but I think you're fine. I do think that shop should refund your money.

So the next question should be: what fluid did they put in? The same as what was in there already (preferably), or one that's fully compatible? Just that if they are so incompetent not to top up fluid that had obviously drained from the cooler lines, then you'd want to double check everything critical they did.

Avoid the dealer who said "S". Pretty much all this info is in the pinned "General Information and FAQ" thread above.

A simple drain and fill won't help enough, you'll have well over of quart of the wrong fluid left in the torque converter. All the fluid needs to be changed out without the possibility of old fluid mixing with new, dealerships should have those machines, storing the old fluid while pumping in fresh fluid (or a transmission cooler return line flush would work also, no special equipment needed, but is more complicated.) You might call the other dealer that said "Matic D" to see what they recommend, and then customer service at Infinity USA as to what restitution might be available. GL.

Yet another question: which lines did they replace with metal? The flexible lines connecting the trans to the cooler in the radiator? If so, that's not a good thing, these lines NEED to be flexible to facilitate movement between the engine and transmission and the radiator, which is fixed to the chassis. If have an after-market cooler that had it's own inter-cooler flex lines, different story, but the lines to the trans must be flexible.

A few oz out of 9 qts shouldn't be a problem.
