upon switching from normal low beams to high beams, there is a slight pause (about a second or two) where the lights completely go out then the high beams come on. is this possibly a short in the wires? something easily fixed? or requires opening things up and rewiring. The switch from highs to lows works normally.

If they turn on, I wouldn't really worry about it. I can't remember if there is a pause in mine, I never turn my high beams on.

You could try switching the relays to see if that fixes it. If the relay is bad let me know and I'll just mail you one. I have quite a few laying around.

You can do that or a relay for another system.

Alright, these are a little big but here you go:

I would use the fan or fog light relay for the test. What's interesting is it looks like there is only one relay for the low beams and two for the highs so you may want to check the low beam relay as well as it would be very unlikely for two relays to be bad.

each of the relays has a plastic cover that i am assuming comes off? any tips to pop those off? also should the battery be disconnected when switching the relays?

You really shouldn't have to disconnect the battery but you can just to be on the safe side.

The plastic of the relay is all part of the relay. It might have a clip on it to hold it in, I can't remember off hand if those do. If so, you can use a flat head screw driver to hold the clip in then just pull the relay out.
