Low Fuel mileage warning

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

When fuel gets low warning comes on its usually in the 50-60 km left range.
As it decreases and it gets to about the 35km reading the displays then just shows ' ----- ' (dashes)
Even if I shut the car off overnight and start it the next day , the warning will come on but again the distance left
will be just the dashes. This happens all the time. Sometimes I forget what the distance reading was last.
In fear of of not of not running out of gas I have to fill up.

Is this the normal operation for the EX ??

My previous vehicle (Acura) distance reading would go down right to zero. I know it could go that low as it had a reserve of 3 liters.
I dont know what ours has ?

Whether it's normal or not, running your tank that low is a bad idea. Try not to let it dip below 1/4 tank.
Running on empty: Low gas in the tank can be costly

The gasoline acts like a coolant for the electric fuel-pump motor, so when you run very low, this allows the pump to suck in air, which creates heat and can cause the fuel pump to wear prematurely and potentially fail. The repair could end up costing a couple hundred dollars to fix—much more than the $4.00/gallon fill up.

Also, if there is dirt in the fuel tank, it could lead to blocking the fuel filter; again, another expensive repair.

Duly noted Rogue One. Should say I dont make it a habit of running low every time. Just obsevered this a few times
since I've had the car.
Was just wondering if this was just normal ?

I think it's normal - mine does the same and scared the crap out of me the first time it happened. I asked the Infiniti service advisor about it the next time I had the car in and he said that it was normal. As for the reserve, the manual does not state the amount of fuel: "There will be a small reserve of fuel in the tank when the fuel gauge needle reaches “E”."

Mine also does it. I think that's the whole point of it, to scare you into putting gas now.

mine also goes to dashes after a while also, but there are two places you can see miles remaining and usually one continues with a countdown.

Related to this low fuel warning - mine usually turns on with between 42-37 miles remaining. I swear those miles countdown at least 3X faster than that... what I mean is I would be hard pressed to get 15 miles till the number goes to 0, even if it said 40 miles remaining... the only way I could possibly get 40 miles till the counter goes to 0 is if I was coasting downhill for 40 miles!
Is that the same for everyone also??

My 2011 is the same, and the rapid countdown from about 40 miles is disconcerting as it turns to dashes by the high 20's. I suppose the lawyers told them not let it get down too far so if someone runs out of gas on the highway and gets slammed from behind they can't sue for misinformation.

What baffles me is why have an actual numbered warning count to start with ? They (Engineers) must know that it is an inaccurate value. As some of your posts, and also like my readings, the values decreases rapidly.
What would be more helpful would have been a low warning at the 1/4 level mark , where I normally fill up at . Then another at 1/8th.
The final warning would be when the car stops ie run out :)
