My low fuel indicator is not working anymore .. Any clues on what could be wrong? I have a 1996 Infiniti Q45 with 104000 miles. The fuel pump humms, but not loud(sound OK to me). Could it be that it needs to be replaced? Is there a float in there that could be stuck?

It appears to be controled by the float. I assume it's a potentiometer that grounds out when the float gets low enough. The instrument cluster is looking for "ground" when it puts the "LOW FUEL" warning in the info. display.

I haven't seen mine since about 2000 when I learned here (or on the yahoo board) that running the tank lower than 1/4 tank leaves the pump above the fuel causing it to heat up more and wear out faster.... ok maybe once

If yours is origninal I'd say it's time to replace it before you burn out the FPCU too! Does your gauge still work? When the tank is completely full does the needle go up to slightly above the full mark?

Yeah if you look at the sending unit, theres a little thing that looks like a part of a pencil, its round and i guess when the gas doesnt touch it anymore then the thing comes on.

So, it's not my fuel pump. It could just be that sensor (FSM: EL53 or EL68). I'll check it out and let you guy know. Thanks.....Dexter

Yep... should flash on your "info cluster" where the dual trip meters normaly show. []LOW FUEL

I'm guessing if you're seeing another warning message like []BRAKE PADS WORN - that would take precedence over the fuel warning - but I don't know for sure.

I have run the tank down to a tad under E for the past few weeks a couple of times I see no such message.... When I refuel the best I did was a 77L fill....Is the tank 80L?

And you want us to do what? When you buy 18 year old car that has had previous owners,expect some things to be broken. Refuel before you hit empty and concentrate on bigger issues, which there will be many on an old Q.....especially those with multiple previous owners {and double that if the last few were males under 30}

The low fuel sensor will come on at different fuel levels. It all depends on the position the fuel pump sending unit was re-installed in. If your fuel pump has never been replaced then mark the fuel tank and sending unit so it can be re-installed in the same spot.

Mine was replaced once and now the low fuel light will come on when the fuel gauge is below the last line. Also it took 19.XX gallons to refill the tank. So the Q fuel tank is 22.5 gallons meaning the light came one at 3.5 gallons of fuel left in the tank.

Didn't want you to do anything,only stated that since owning her for the past 5 years I have never seen a low fuel warning.The only things that so far have popped up are door,brake,and one trans,forgot to hook up tps.Came across thread while doing research like a good NICO member. :ohno:
