About a month ago I picked up a 92 240sx super-hicas on the cheap. Spent some time fussing with timing chain being put on wrong and missing vacuum lines, only to find out that the compression is low on all 4 cyl. 75 on #2 100 on the rest. The way it loses compression suggests the rings are bad, my mechanic friend thought that the motor may have been overheated.

Anyhow, I'm wanting to tear into the ka and check things out, maybe get some new rings on, I figgure its already mostly undrivable, not like I can hurt anything. If I can't get it back together for very little money, then I'll just buy the rb20det I've had my eye on.

I would like to know any special tools I might need in order to pull the pistons out and put new rings on, and if anybody has a step by step process maybe some pics of what I'm getting into. The factory service manual is a little light on details.

I haven't done any work on the internals of an engine before, but no time like the present. I have swapped out things like rear diff and axles, and 300zx brake upgrade on my wifes 240sx.

Thanks in advance for any info that can be provided on the proceedure.

well the bore and such have to be checked for roundness etc. Really this is machinist territory and if you want to rebuild the motor right i suggest taking it to a machine shop to be rebuilt.

You could put new rings in and hone the cylinders yourself. But the block/cylinders may not be straight anymore (and thus would require machining). You will need special tools to measure things inside the block to check. Best to leave it to the pros.
