In its latest round of ads, Nissan is calling out its Japanese competitors for having supply issues. Those supply issues were caused by a natural disaster that severely affected Honda's production volume.

"HA HA THE EARTHQUAKE GOT YOU GOOD!"

What a bunch of classless jackasses.

I wasn't planning on buying a new Nissan. Here's an additional reason not to.

Eh, I think it's fair game. I've noticed it on tv but I don't take into subliminal advertisements. I think it's been long enough since the quake to say that they have overpassed Honda for the time being, but it doesn't make me want a Nissan more or a Honda less

It's been less than a year. Honda's 25% sales drop from August 2010 and Nissan's 22% sales gain (even with stale products like the Altima) can be directly attributed to earthquake-affected availability.

Nissan's marketing people should be fired, or beaten mercilessly with stale baguettes from Renault.

i work at a honda dealership, and after the quake and everything, since we werent getting any new cars in, we ended up having only 6 new cars on the lot up until a few weeks ago. and this is the largest volume dealer in the midwest. and we just started getting multiple trucks a day with new cars.

I didn't quite get that from the commercial. Nissan has been very open with their progress and what has been going on since the quake and their reaction should be something to talk about. Somewhere they have a site directly dedicated to what they have been doing since the event, it's where I got this information and video from:

I suppose it's considered fair game, but I agree Nissan's marketing department is taking the low road as Honda's sales dip was not result of NIssan offering significantly better vehicles. The strategy might work for the next month or two, for those determined to buy a new car right now, but if that ad gets too much play, it could easily generate a negative perception for the Nissan brand, hurting sales worse later on when Honda's plants get going again.

I think the person who approved the ad for distribution should get... :slap:

The proper message should have been:

"The earthquake in Japan was devastating, but Nissan is coming back strong" rather than "YEAH UNLIKE YOU-KNOW-WHO WHOSE FACTORIES WERE NEAR THE EPICENTER NEENER NEENER"

A lost opportunity for increasing the brand's goodwill. So many better ways to communicate the same point.

Politicians engage in worse campaigns than that all the time.

It would be the equivalent of President Obama saying "Vote for me because Mitt Romney is in a coma after a near-fatal bus accident."

Except we don't have to vote for him because he is already president?

It's more like Obama saying "Vote for me because unlike M__ _____y I"m not in a coma after a near-fatal bus accident."

It's petty, shady, morally questionable, and worthy of scorn. Most of all, pathetic [on the part of Nissan].

The other piece of the message is that typical Honda and Toyota customers are settling for Nissans because they have to, not because Nissan legitimately won them over with competitive offerings backed by a reputation for quality.

Lucking out by dodging a disaster is not the same as delivering a solid performance. [Nissan uses more non-Japanese parts than its Japanese competitors.]

They definitely should have gone with that. Now Nissan is Scumbag Steve and Honda can play the sympathy card for so much p00n.

Normally that is a dealer add on (low blow  )

I didn't watch the ad but I don't think that was Nissan's intent.

I think Nissan's general intent was to remind the public that they had cars and trucks available for purchase.

The ad agency that wrote the copy and Nissan's marketing people who approved it took it one step too far, way too far. Honda and Toyota were specifically cited as points of comparison in the text at the bottom of the ad, so there wasn't even any subtlety.

Yeah that's a little sketchy, I would have thought it was "ok", if they didnt have that small snippet where you could tell the guy was standing at a Honda dealer..
