Low Beam Not working

Postby Bmore2ny » Thu Jul 04, 2013 7:56 am

I got up this morning and replaced my xenon bulbs and for some reason the left bulb will not come on. I tested the bulb on the other side and the bulb woked. What else could be wrong? :wtf2:

perhaps the ballast went bad. try checking out your connections to make sure that they are tight

I checked connections. It may be the ballast. I was thinking that may have been it. Do you know how difficult they are to replace?

Hopefully, another member who has actually DONE this project can clarify or correct me.

I have not yet had to replace ballasts ... but .... I found a post on here that says the OEM ballasts are hard-wired into the light assembly and you cannot just unplug the bad ballast and plug in the new and replacements from Infiniti are about $300 each side. His info, NOT mine. That member instructed that you cut the old ballast off at the wires and splice on a new aftermarket ballast. Some of Infiniti parts seem to have been designed to make it as hard as humanly possible to work on. Never would I have thought that you have to remove wheels and dismantle wheel wells just to change a light bulb ?!?!?

If that member is correct, I would suggest you buy BOTH ballasts and change them both out to avoid having to dismantle the car a third time when the other ballasts goes titz-up.
In was able to find a post with pics form a member who installed HID bulbs, fogs, and ballasts. Hopefully this will help. This is actually an install on an M that didn't already have HID headlamps, but if you decide to install from scratch with your new bulbs and cut off the old ballsts, this is a great tutorial.

Hi Bmore2ny,

If you order only ballasts, I would suggest a pair of OEM Matsushita Gen V Ballasts ($165.00): http://www.theretrofitsource.com/produc ... cts_id=147

If you order only bulbs, I would suggest a pair of D2S: Philips 85122+ bulbs ($95.00): http://www.theretrofitsource.com/produc ... cts_id=148 or D2S: Morimoto 3Five (35w) ($45.00): http://www.theretrofitsource.com/produc ... ts_id=1250 (select 4,300K for OEM color).

If you order the OEM bulbs and ballasts, I would suggest the D2S: Philips OEM HID System ($265.00): http://www.theretrofitsource.com/produc ... cts_id=177

If you must use the cheapest (I wouldn't use the cheapest for low beams), you can get this HID Kit ($47.94): http://www.ddmtuning.com/Products/DDM-H ... 35W-or-55W (select 35W, D2S, 4,500K and mounting brackets if you'd like).

Hope this helps.

@cruzad3r I appreciate the offer but, sadly I now live in Florida. I have found ballast on ebay for only $75. I figured I would give it a shot. That's just one less dinner out for my wife. Lol.

I had a left low beam out. It was the ballast. Got one on eBay for under$100. Still working fine.

I would Definitely go with the Retrofit ballast. I have a kit and a set of bulbs in my car now. 3K kit for the fogs and 6K bulbs for the lows. Works great. I suggest you go with them if you are doing aftermarket. They give a very good warranty. Also, if you use the code HDPLANET, you get free shipping !

Harder than you can possibly imagine.
The OEM ballasts have a metal mesh around the wires on the output side making it very hard to cut. You need some real metal clippers to do it. Then the even bigger problem is that the wires are run THROUGH the headlight assembly and requires a complete deconstruction of the entire thing, which includes taking off the outer lens and breaking the airtight seal which will probably require baking to get back on properly. It took me 16 hours to replace my ballasts, mostly because it was so hard to even figure out in the first place with how retarded the setup is. In the end I just bypassed the whole thing and drilled through the back cap on the low beam and ran a new wire through for a new ballast and then sealed it up. From now on when a ballast goes out (seems to be more common than a bulb going bad) I can just plug and play a new ballast in without any issue and it will take me 10 minutes.

Seriously. I thought the dealer had to be high when they told me $1500 to replace the light because the ballast was out. I decided to go aftermarket since I could do both sides for $120. After it is all said and done I really wished I had just shelled out $1500 to get a new light for the one side and not had to deal with it.

I have a 2006 M35, I have changed the ballast using an after market part. I used the original wire connection because the aftermarket wire connection wasn't long enough. This ballast has gone out before, I had the dealership change it the last time. What else could it possibly be?
