other than the obvious reason for this prompt to come up, what else can I or should I look for troubleshooting? Could it be the altewrnator or plugs as well??

Alternator is a possibility. Not sure what you mean about "plugs" - not spark plugs?

Check to see if the alternator belt is broken. If it is, the most likely culprit is the idler pulley needs a new bearing (or complete replace).

Count your belts and let us know.

Does the battery fail to start the car sometimes? all the time?

You could have a short... If you think that is the case I would start by removing all unnecessary fuses such as the radio fuse, PWR windows, PWR locks... whatever not needed to run the engine. The relay fuses...

Have you tried a new battery? Sometimes new batteries are dead ones so warranty + replacement. Had an issue like this with my Honda Accord the other day.
