It would be nice if someone would number and name the parts in that picture. It would help to educate the mechanical dummies of NICO. Where is my hat...:dunce. It may take a minute or two but it would be a great resource for FAQs. When we describe/discuss parts and DIY projects we could say..."See item number so and so? That is the so and so, remove it and...." Just a thought.

I know this engine is based on the engine tested by Paul Newman's race-car but I wonder if Nissan had planned to use this engine in race applications as well.

The forged, beefy crankshaft is positioned unusually high for a production V8. Such placement allows for higher block rigidity for higher rev's and forced induction. Just look at the cross-bracing and 6-bolt mains.

This is as stout as an alluminum block can be. With proper valve-train bolstering, this engine could easily rev up to 10K.

Imagine 10Krpm with 20PSI of boost.. :ylsuper

Sure does look clean until you add the hundreds of fasteners that hold it all together, not to mention all those damn hoses under the plenum! It's a beaut!

Actually, the axis of the crankshaft is exactly where it is meant to be in relation to the intersection of the cylinder bores with that axis; i.e., it is neither "high" nor "low" for a 90° V8.

What is remarkable is the extension of the block well below the crankshaft axis centerline, the extra reinforcement provided by the bearing beam, and the six bolt mains as noted by Sopd.

A frustrating engine to modify because it is so over engineered (optimized)! Hence its extraordinary longevity in a normal state of tune.

That picture was also in the special Infiniti issue Road and Track put out when the Q45 and M30 were launched. It had lot of other interesting pictures and commentary about the design of the car as well. I fortunately hung onto it even though I didn't own an Infiniti at the time.

Every single part in the race engine was different from the stock engine.........longevity and high power for a few hours require completely different metals!

This was just a WOW engine in 1989 by 1994 and 1996 most other lux V8 used many of these techniques.

Even the Lexus now has a 6 bolt bearing beam and Moly coated piston skirts. But no then or today reinforced the block like 90-96Q did way too expensive when a cheaper design works fine for years and years.
