Loud whining sound, what could it be?!?!

its been cold out lately and a loud whine has started, sounds like a turbo spooling up and happens threw every gear and while idling, but like i said it just started since it got cold and i havnt tried to pin point it yet. any ideas on what it might be? *KA 93 240sx HICAS*

could also be due to condensation on the pullys if it is indeed coming from the belts since you said its cold out.

Try to pin point where the sound is coming from though. It makes it a ton easier to think of ideas.

If it's a WHINE, not a SQUEAL - Most likely, that's your power steering pump. Mine's doing the same thing. They cost around $150 at advance auto.

To check, take a hose and put it to your ear w/the car running. Go under the hood and put the other end of the hose near the PS pump while gunning the engine. It should be obvious.

Do you have a radio ? are you sure its mechanical ? it could be interference ( feedback) through your head unit try turning it off and if it pops or changes tone you will know if you have any kind of bose stereo its very likely the problem

Check all fluid levels including DIFF and transmission.

could be the TOB tends to give a distinct whining sound, does it make it during the use of the clutch pedal? or alter the sound?

Yes.It should go away when you push the clutch down...

But you said you hear the whining when you are actually driving in gear right?If that is the case I wouldn't think TOB, but I'm NO expert.

Most likly1. belts2. altinator3. PS punp4 throw out bearing

Just my opnion. That is the order I would check things.
