Hey guys, I have a recently rebuilt red top SR with about 1000 miles. Yesterday I started up my car and I heard a whining noise that kind of sounds like a super charger that would increase with RPM's as I revved it up..

I decided to trouble shoot and took off all the belts and started the car with no accessaries on the crank pulley. Well the whine is still there. It seems like its coming from the crank pulley area. I took off my valve cover and turned the motor over with the starter to see if it was coming from my valve train but it is not... the chain also has tension..

Has anybody ever encountered this problem? please help thanks

I'm having the EXACT same problem. Took it to a guy on Nico forums that works on 240's and he pointed out that my front main seal is bad and leaking. He said the sound is most likely my front main seal making the whine. I am getting it replaced on thursday or friday, I will let you know if that fixes the issue. But I did notice that you are on a rebuild so the front main seal should have been replaced on yours.

Any news. HAving the same problem And I am getting plenty oil in the head.

Also seems to go away once the car has warmed up to operating temperature or more.

don't listen to this guy. f***in idiot, there is no ball bearings in the crank pulley. Why would you even say that? The pulley rotates with the crank and the crank rotates on the crank bearings.

I would try the main seal first. When my main seal was bad it was leaking oil bad but it would also squeal for a second when I let the clutch out to accelerate.

Since its a new rebuild, I really hope its nothing too serious. Noise coming from the crank area is never good.

Not enough clearances between gears will cause a whine. Normal source are the timing gears, OIL PUMP GEARS, and distributor (cas) to camshaft.

Did you get a new oil pump when you did the rebuild?
