Loud transmission in heavy snow & slush?

Has anyone else noticed that the transmission, or possibly engine, sound get quite loud in heavy snow or slush. The first time I thought something was wrong, but otherwise everything was normal. The same thing has happened in 2 subsequent snowstorms, so now I ignore it, but am baffled since I've never had that happen in any other vehicle.

Enquiring minds want to know.

I've had my 09 Murano since November drove through snow and ice many times but had not noticed it until this weekend. When driving uphill in slush, the engine/transmission was really loud. I thought something had broke. As soon as I got to level terrain, the sound stopped. I tried turning off the traction control to see if that was it. That main no difference.
