I Have A Loud Squeal From The Engine On Start Ups(Lasts For A Few Seconds), I Was Told It Was A Tensioner(I See One That Wobbles A Little).....But My Question Is Which One Could This Be(Its Small And Located All The Way Towards The Bottom) And Also Whats A General Price I Should Pay To Have It Replaced.....

Thanks

have you had any work done to your steering pump, AC compressor, or alternator?, or have you changed your belts recently?.......i happened to me when i changed the alternator, the sound came from the alternator belt, i tightened the belt and the problem never came back......

i would tighten the belts first before i start spending money, and if the belts are old, replace them, they are a good safety as the winter is closing in.....

there is only one tensioner for the fan belts, it is the AC tensioner, at the bottom of the engine, if it is moving up and down (up and down in the slot), then it just needs to be tightened, however, if it moves in and out of it's socket, then replace it asap as that could cause further damage (but first check if the nut that holds the pulley to the slot is tightened), you can grab one from a scrap yard for the 300zx engines (90-96 TT or NA, the both have that exact part)

the belts are usually tightened twice, according to the service manual, when replacing fan belts, tighten everything, and expect one of them to loosen a little, which is diagnosed by a sound at start-up (just as you are discribing), then tighten that belt again so it wont make that noise anymore...... by the way, i've heard a lot of stories similar to this and the answer was that the power steering fluid was low, i'd suggest that you check that as well..... i hope this helps, good luck

If the sound is more screechy than a squeal and is intermittent (sometimes there and sometimes not) its your flywheel.

As mentioned, check the belts first. I had the same problem over the summer and it has returned in earnest this winter (cold starts), I'm going to tighten mine up as soon as the snow melts. Of course I replaced the tensioner, alternator, and considered the A/C and fan clutch before I got smart and did the belts.

I have the same problem, and read somewhere on here that its those stupid gatback goodyear belts.

As soon as I have some cash Im going to the dealer to buy OEM belts.

Me experience, go with OEM parts from the start, saves alot of headaches and guessing about aftermarket parts reating problems!

I am new to the site, but I think I am pretty knowledgable about the J. I have expirienced the loud squeaking several times with my J. The first time it was the idler pulley, but then I realized that it was the power steering pump. So, I replaced that (about 142 bucks w/ core replacement around 90) and the squeaking went away.

I had the same problem, but it was my belts. For a while we used wd40 and then had to have the belts replaced. Haven't squealed since.

I love my j 30 tooooo.
