You might want to check under your hood for something called snail syndrome. You shouldn't complain too much as it really isn't a bad thing at all.

It could be the clutch for your radiator fan. When mine went bad, it sounded like I had a jet engine when over 3000 rpm.

loud spooling huh? Sounds like a turbo to me. But if it aint a turbo thats spooling, you might want to check the bearings on your pulleys. Mine made a spooling sound on my sohc before it gave out.

i looked for this exact same problem for the past two years.

its not the fan, because i dont have one.

its not the intake manifold, or any of the intake parts, because ive swapped everything.

i've tightened and loosened pullies with no avail, and i dont even have A/C. Its not the alternator, thats different too.

Its not a vac leak, because i only use a brake booster and FPR vac lines now. the problem has been around since everything was connected.

its not the clutch or transmission, as that all new or swapped.

for all i know it could be some crazy differential whine...

ive changed or swapped everything, and i cant find the problem, even the head has a valvejob. the only reason i cant hear it anymore is because i got an apexi N1 dual knock off exhaust. but i understand your problem, and people behind the car in other cars can hear this fake spool. people ive beat ask about the turbo, its a legitimate s13 problem apparently...

I’ve never heard of or had that problem and my KA had 270k miles before I swapped it. The only thing that comes close to what you guys are talking about is an Alternator that is not grounded properly. I have a friend, who owns a Dodge Daytona, and he recently replaced his alternator, but he didn't ground it properly. One day he was driving up to my house and his car sounded like it had a turbo, I could actually hear that noise coming up the street. After checking everything out he discovered it was the alternator ground problem.

yeah, my other two KA's were fine...

and i know its not a grounding problem, because both grounds are attached and functional.

Sounds like a metallic vibration, loose exhaust system hardware. Check to see if anything is rubbing metal on metal, loose bolts, gasketes..etc

my sisters coupe was making a loud whistling noise also, i researched it, turned out to be the exhaust manifold had a crack in it. Just a thought.

really? i'd think if there was some sort of exaust leak somewhere that it would probably be louder than that... hmmm

I fixed this exact problem on my old Z.

It was easy, I removed the catalytic converter for a test pipe and viola!! Sounds great and not a hint of engine whine.

Also check your PS pump isn't going bad. Sometimes they whine even when full if they are going out.

Also if a car has been in a wreck the shape of where the motor mounts are can be slightly distorted, causing a major air rushing sound, doesn't sound much like a spool though, sounds more like a jet engine, same sound occours when your fan clutch goes bad and locks up, or if you get one from autozone. haha.

I'd check that cat, if it's the OEM one still, that's likely your problem, air flow tends to get distorted in there after a hundred thousand miles of carbon buildup.

well i have the "spooling" sounds as well... i figured if there was a crack anywhere in the exhaust.. it would be pretty loud, theoretically speaking.. naw mean?

For the record, tiny exhaust leaks can be very quiet - even right on the exhaust manifold. Some are so quiet that they are but a whisper.

I reckon you might compare it to bird poo on your hood. One day you notice it, wonder how long it's been there, then a week later you don't even give a **** anymore.

My altima has a whisting noise, but it sounds like more of a supercharger whine and i figured out that it was coming from my belt (can't remember what brand) which has v ribs in it that come to a point like a tire tread.

Hey man, i had the EXACT problem on my NA KA

Its an exhaust leak somewhere.

I used to think it was fun to pull on ppl then rev up so they could hear it "spool" its funny as hell. But I got it fixed when I had my 3" piping put on.

When I was getting mine fixed, there was a kid there that LIKED his!?!?!? he cut a small hole in his exhaust to MAKE it make that sound.... god i swear, rice....
