Just started happening a few weeks ago. I live in the northeast and its very chilly in the mornings...After I start up the car, it makes a loud screeching noise when I drive...Dont know what it is, thought it was my brakes but that wasn't the case. Any ideas.

Just to clarify, once you start the car and start driving down the road, there is a screeching noise? Does it go away eventually? Is it related to the engine rpms, or speed of the car, or is is constant. If you could give some more detail, we may be able to help you track down the culprit.

When I started my engine one morning, it sounded like my valves were slapping. I shut off the engine and saw several black strings hanging from under the car. I opened the hood and the fan belt was torn to pieces. The nylon cords were wrapped around the alternator and belt came off the A/C pulley. Car has 32000 miles on it and I checked the belt 2000 miles earlier when I changed the oil. I went to a local parts store and picked up a new belt. I had to cut the belt to get the car into the garage. I jacked up the car and took off the tire and a squirrel was looking right at me. It was stuck between the engine oil pan and the frame. Its tail was hanging out under the car. The belt I got from the local parts store will not fit on the pulleys and i verified the part was correct and the std part # was 6pk1805 made by Dayco. I went to the Nissan dealer and picked up the OEM belt and it had a part # of 6pk1808. The 6 says how many groves and the numbers is the overal length of the belt in MM. The Dayco belt was 3MM shorter and would not fit correctly. I installed the Nissan belt and it fit on without any effort. The tensioner marks was at the lower limit of the marks for the Nissan belt. If I forced the Dayco belt on I would be below the limit marks and I would have damaged the tensioner or one of the bearings on the accessories. For your reference I live in NJ.

So it was the squirrel screeching?
