I was downstairs eating when I heard what sounded like 2 heavy a** cats scratching the ceiling and running around in figure 8's, happened again about an hour later..

Vermin?

I took a hockey stick and tried tapping the ceiling everywhere but the noise didn't happen again.

Ahhh springtime! I had a condo with possum issues where they'd get between my floor and downstairs neighbor's ceiling. She always heard the noise.... then got the maggots when they'd die in there. Luckily it was investment property, so I didn't actually live there. Putrified possum isn't high on my list of favorite smells.

Time to look for areas around your house that could allow critters to enter. One trick the animal control guy used was to tape up a suspected entry point with masking tape, then look to see if it's open and pushed outward. If so, your critter has left the building... you really don't want to seal it up with one in there.

Good luck!

Heath

Always something lovely to look forward to

I haven't heard the noise since then, I might have to get up on the roof and start looking for some breached enclosures

Most likely mice.

I had an issue with them a few years back around now and the fall. Mice/rats hate the smell of mint, peppermint and spearmint. I planted a whole bunch of it around the perimeter of the house and they disappeared.

I would advise planting mixed culps of them around the perimeter. It works best.

I made my post before I read that, can't see how I missed it. Guess that makes me Hudson, not Hicks.

Soup, if you have any cop friends see if they can borrow a snake cam and check out what's going on in Amityville South. Be safer than just sticking your head up there and having some critter latch on to your face. I'm betting on raccoons.

Have you done a property walk around?

Do you see shingles, bits of insulation etc on the ground? That usually indicates squirrels, raccoons, etc. If you have fence posts that butt up against the house, lay down some spike strips. It doscourages climbing.

Mice tend to come back into homes in the November/December time frame.

This laid outside:

work's well. It also has the ability to kill large rodents like squirrels and raccoons. Keep cats and dogs away from it, because it can seriously sicken them.

we have a noisy, fluffy friend in our walls too... the cat chases it throughout the two rooms. We think squirrels but haven't seen what it is yet.

Take care of it now rather than later. We had a family of raccoons in our foundation space and in a matter of a week they had ripped up every one of the 8 vents down there to make their nest. Not to mention the smell.

My parents had a raccoon in their attic. The key to getting rid of a raccoon and to ensure they never come back, is getting rid of the offending smell. Raccoons including progeny, will small their way back to a nest from 100's of miles the next season. Best thing to use is Volcanic\Lava rock. It completly absorbs the smell.

Ever since I explored that space with the lightsaber, no hostile being has ever returned to my attic.
