There isn't one. Aftermarket exhausts have reduced backpressure as compared to the stock exhaust, meaning that some fuel is going to be pulled into the exhaust during the overlap period of the camshaft due to improved ehxaust scavenging. It then ignites when it contacts the hot exhaust pipe. This situation is exacerbated during shifting, as you suddenly lift throttle which makes the car run rich for a moment. Therefore, you get a popping noise.

It's extremely common with aftermarket exhaust systems.

Happens with my 2.5" BRM with an aftermarket cat in place. Lift throttle...pop,pop, burble burble.

I actually kind of enjoy it.

My BRM 2.5 inch with a high flow cat does that as well around 2000-3000 rpm on downshifts

I get the same popping with my 3" Blitz Realize TT. I personally hate that popping sound. I get sorta embarassed when it comes out of my car. It sounds to me like a dying old car. The method I would use to not hear that sound when coming to a stop or lifting my foot off the accelerator is by stepping down on the clutch or just put it in neutral.

the popping was there to begin with, but since you added a higher flowing exhaust it is more noticable

Does the same with my 3" Apexi N-1, especially when the motor is not at operating temp.

vvrrooommmm pop pop pop BANG gurgle gurlge burble burble. Gets you a second look from ricers and pedestrians.

Oh and the Apexi N-1 comes in 2.5 and 3 inch!!

GTS, i believe the only thing it COULD do is burn some **** in your cat, maybe some old oil left in the pipe, but over all no it shouldnt

it improves performance because it flows better (the muffler is restricting the "pops", thus restricting performance), your "exhaust" pops (actually the motor causes the sound) because it is still restricted. if you ran off the manifold you wouldn't even hear any pops. maybe some cause the stock manifold is quite restrictive. so basically the "pops" you hear is the restiction of the exhaust

Not sure if the sound improves performance, but it does make me feel funny in my pants.

Also, what is this "cat" thing you speak of? :D

Actually, I've been running a BRM exhaust with a highflow cat with no problems. The cat is functioning fine, car runs great and with the exhaust and header the butt dyno is definitely registering a power increase.

i beleived you answered your own question. " what is this cat thing you speak of" catylitic converter. yes your car will run fine even without one. that is if you own an S13 because there aren't any sensors after the "cat"

Last night i found out why i have popping from my exausht. I was doing a oil change and i saw two injectors that are leaking pretty bad. I ran my obd-1 and came up was 32 EGR Problem could that be the problem???

I can make my exhaust pop on demand now. I love it. I like to sneak up right next to people who aren't paying attention and make it pop real loud!!!
