If you put a gallon of oil in it, it will be coming out of the breather vent on top of the transmission when you drive- and will completely coat the underside of the car- talk about a mess. It holds 2.4 quarts.
I have been through a coupla' these trannys- if you used a new throwout that came with the transmission then that should not be the problem- unless you didn't pack it with grease or something. Sounds like bearing troubles to me- like input shaft bearing or some of the other internal bearings. Was it ever driven with low oil in the transmission? The idler shaft bearing went out on mine and it made a horendous noise like you are talking about. There were literally pieces of bearing getting grinded up inside the transmission. When I took it apart, it was a total loss- all the bearings were worn out and the gear teeth were in bad shape from munching on pieces of bearing. (I didn't have a choice but to drive it about 50 miles home after the noise started- big stereo system = not gonna leave it by the road at night) Got a used transmission with 65K on it from the junkyard for 300 clams. Problem solved.
So now you have a high-dollar spooky-lightweight flywheel- and a busted transmission!! I'm not criticizing- I do things like that too. Seriously man, it sounds like you need to be scouring the junkyards...
