Hey guys please help me with this....

I replaced my old KA with a newer one and did a 5 spd swap at the same time. The newer motor came with a 5spd transmission and i decided to take it apart to replace the clutch, release bearing, pressure plate and resurface the flywheel. Everything seemed to go smoothly. I installed all the 5spd parts (clutch and brake pedal, master & slave cylinder,5spd ABS driveshaft and did the necessary wiring). I am still running the auto ECU.

Now I added all the fluids and fired it up. She actually started. However, there is a loud noise coming from the transmission or the rear part of the motor. When she first fired up there was some blk smoke (now its cooled off a lil), so i checked the timing by the lines on the crank pulley and position of the distributor at the TDC mark. It was positioned at cylinder 4 at TDC and i've read that 1 or 4 is acceptable. I am getting spark on all cylinders.

Before I begin to remove the transmission I would like to know if anyone else has encountered this. Do i need to check my timing with a timing light? I was told that the pilot bearing may need to be changed, but would it make this loud of a noise??? Also, I have noticed that there is a sensor which is not plugged in and i can't find it on my harness or heard of it being installed in the write-ups which I've read. Its the Crank Angle sensor I believe, and it sits on the top of the 5spd transmission.

Here is a vid of my prob: http://smg.photobucket.com/alb...6.flv

Here are some pics of the transmission, plz let me kno if u see something worng. I did clean the bellhousing b4 throwing it back on...

i doubt that is a transmission noise, i would say crank or lower bearing problem, where did the motor come from, you should pull the engine and check your crank.

Well someone has suggested that i try to shim the starter because it may not be meshing up with the flywheel properly......guna give it a shot

but that would only make noise during startup, afterwords it disengages and has no contact with the flywheel

yeah this does sound to be bottom end engine, nothing with transmission or starter. so how about when you push the clutch down? clutch down in gear? rev the car some, does the noise become louder with the rpm's (it sounded like it in the video)? seems like you may have to pull the engine and rip her apart.

Sounds like the person who sold you that engine needs a swift kick in the nuts.

That sounds really bad dude, i wana say its rod knock, but fvk that doesnt sound like any rod knock iv ever heard. Still sounds like its in the bottom end. Regardless, its something serious....

Does it change at all when you put the clutch in? Does it make that noise when you try to move the car?

Too fast for a rod knock, and its not up top. 10 bux says the flywheel is hitting/rubbing on something. Check the trans dust plate for any wear, or even take it off and start it up. And for good measure, pull the plug wires one by one(meaning pull one, then put it back on) while its running. If it is a rod knock the sound will go away when you pull the plug wire off. But I would put money on the flywheel hitting something.

The crank angle sensor is not on the transmission. Also make sure you set the timing right. If I remember correct you have to set it with the crank angle sensor unplugged (not real sure anymore with the KA - i've not had to mess with mine on the SR), but there is a right up on here for it and I thought it was set on cylinder 1. Don't remember it being on #4. I agree with everyone else about it not sounding like transmission noise, but more like bearing or rod noise... try the video with someone putting clutch in and out and slightly rev motor... also are you getting good oil pressure/ is oil pressure sending unit plugged in (plug right below oil filter) and working. Isn't crank angle sensor on KA in same spot as SR on top of motor on distributor?... Hope you figure it out as that noise does not sound good... keep us posted.

the sound is still present with the clutch down or up. it does get louder when i give it gas. I tried shimming the starter but no luck. this is pissing me off. I will try to rip the transmission out tomorrow but will check if im getting oil pressure and pulling the plugs as what was suggested.

Before dropping the trans, pull the plug wires, and take the dust plate off the trans. You can see it in the video when you look under the car at the trans. The metal plate thats sandwiched between the trans and those 2 brackets thats bolted to the trans on the bottom. Also, you said your cas isnt plugged in, try taking it off to see if maybe thats what is hitting the flywheel. This is a rod knock :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfJIpiQZ ... elatedHear how slow it is? Just a little more proof for you that it does not sound like your typical rod knock.
