I thought the same exact thing with my ka24e, turns out two of the exhaust manifold studs are gone.. and its leaks from the manny everytime the third piston fires. Sounds exactly like ticking, rpms go up it ticks faster. I would check that out.

most likely a timing chain issue. When my buddy heard that he didn't make it much lopnger. Pop the vc off and check the guides to see if they are still intact. His were desintegrated.

Also check your oil level. It could be that they arent getting properly lubricated.

or the lifters could be drying out as your car sits, once it gets warmed up oil gets back to them making the noise disappear. timing chain guide noise is more of a muffled rattle noise, not really a tick.

If it's a sticky lifter run some ATF (tiny tiny amount) through your oil and let it run for a while. Don't drive it or race the engine. Change the oil after.

also what weight of oil do you use? if it's like 5w 20 use a heavier oil.

also sometimes when people are referring to the timing chain noise, they mean timing chain guide. the guides wear out or get warped of even break. it's a 5 hour mod to remove the guide.. the guide is not needed.

except it only takes about an hour to remove both the upper, and the lower guides. easy as pie dude. just read up on it. even if its not the problem, i would highly suggest taking them out anyway

Were the tensioner's replaced with the timing chain? If not, they probably need clean or replaced. Try cleaning first with some carb cleaner, and pushing the plungers back and forth a few times.

neither. People are not paying attention that you have a sohc. Try a little lucas in your oil next time you change it. It may be a good idea to check your oil pressure to assure good flow. Idk too much on how you adjust the rockers on the sohc or if you even can. Did you do the timing or someone else. Unless you did it, just because the chain was done doesn't mean the tensioners or guides were replaced.

either your oil level is a tad low, or your hydraulic lifters are not getting enough oil...

Quote »Idk too much on how you adjust the rockers on the sohc or if you even can.
can't really adjust them, just checking oil level & possibly checking oil pressure or hopefully you change your oil/filter more frequently so you won't clog them up!

Quote »Did you do the timing or someone else. Unless you did it, just because the chain was done doesn't mean the tensioners or guides were replaced.
that would've been a 1/2 way to change out a timing set... i'd do chains/ sprockets/ tensioner/guides/ water pump/ check fanclutch and or replace...etc

here's a few links for u:

If its lifters the sound should stay with it even at operating temp if i'm not mistaken, but check check oil pressure that could cause the lifters not to get significant oil, or it could be a piston slap because that would go away after the engine heats up due to metals expanding
