loud knocking sound when starting

i have an S14 with stock exhuast piping. i live in toronto, canada, so its pretty cold up here right now... when i start my car i hear loud knocking sound. its definitely coming from the front of the car... it sounds like it has something to do with my exhuast, like a leak or something, but im not too sure. when the car gets warm (after diriving it for a while) the noise goes away... anyone have any idea of what could cause the knocking sound?thanks
