so i went to start up my car the other day and after i started it up it made a loud grinding sound for a couple minutes and then went away. the whole point of me starting the car was to move my car into my garage to pull the plenum. as i am pulling off the necessary things to get off the plenum i noticed there is some oil on my egr gasket and then after i found some oil on each of the individual intake runners. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Externally? On just one side? More detail, please.

the oil was present externally around the rims of each of the intake runners and around the middle part of the gasket side that is closer to the plenum.

So basically it looks like your intake plenum gaskets have failed?

.....Or are we talking about a leaky valve cover gasket on the upper, plenum side (vs. the lower, spark plug side) that's spraying oil onto the plenum and runners?

Your grinding noise that goes away is probably one of the three idler pulley bearings gone bad. It's about $90 for a replacement pulley assy. or about $15 to buy your own bearing and press it out/in.

Interesting possibility, but I have only seen them leak from the low side abouve headers.

Sounds like the inevitable under plenum job and VC replacement looms for you in the immediate future.

sound like your engine is swallowing a lot of oil and is seeping out of the plenum and egr gaskets, ck the pcv system, clean all the oil out of the plenum and replace the gaskets. if it continues you might ck for excessive blowby.
