ok first off i a have done the regular maintenance for my Q. All the regular flushes and change all the fluids and so forth. I use all oem replacement parts. I also have tried searching through the old post but to no avail.

Now on to my question. Recently my car was overheating. the coolant seemed fine but the gauge was reading right below the overheat mark. I figured it might be the thermostat. my fan clutch was also going out. So i installed a new thermostat, fan clutch and fan. I did not install a new water pump. I also had the coolant flushed. The thing is now when i start the car the fan blows really hard. it kinda sounds like a bus if that makes any sense. like a loud wooshing sound. the rpm idles around 1250. The sound kind of goes away when the car warms up. But you can really hear the fan when i step on the gas. Also now when im driving and the car has warmed up i can feel the heat from the engine coming in around my feet area. Kinda like if you ever rode in a muscle car you can feel the heat of the engine at your feet. I have compared it to my friends Q but i cant seem to figure out whats wrong. Please help Q gurus. Constructive criticism please. I am willing to learn to fix the problem and do it right the first time. THANK YOU for your help in advance!!

Your description sounds normal as the natural position is for the heat to flow in the foot wells from the 2 knee ducts + 2 floor vents on either side of center tunnel.

Examine the 124+ pages in FSM concerning HVAC system especially early pages 6-10 which show which vents flow in which selected positions of HVAC panel.

I'm confused. Are you saying the fan blows only on one speed- high?

Is the AC functioning properly (cool air, no heat)? Are the mode buttons working on the controller? Any heat coming out down below with the blower off? Still overheating or is that fixed?

Did you change the thermostat and test the old one?

Must itemize maintenance. Regular to some owners is too little for others.

From your description, it sounds like you finally have a fan clutch that's working!

Typically, the clutch engages for a few seconds immediately after a cold start. Since the fan is running at full engine speed during this time, you'll definitely hear it. Also, the engine runs at a faster idle during this time, which makes the fan louder. The clutch then gradually disengages over the next few seconds, so that the fan is just freewheeling at a slower, quieter speed.

In cold weather (with the A/C and defroster turned off), the engine may not ever get hot enough for the fan clutch to engage. In hot weather (or with the A/C or defroster turned on), you may hear the clutch engage after just a few minutes of driving.

Thanks, Heath! Nice fix on the early HVAC controller boards.

Sorry. No the fan doesnt blow on only one speed. Only on high when i first turn the car on. Then after it warms up it goes down. The AC seems to be working good. All the buttons work. When i put it on econ there doesnt seem to be any heat coming in down below. And yes the overheating issue is gone. The temp gauge now stays in the middle and below.

My fan works intermittently. But not more often than works. With this cold weather I need my heat and defroster. Anyone have one of these all done up I can purchase?

If your fan is working intermittently, I'd think it's worn brushes in the fan motor - not the controller... Just a guess though.

Yep. Replace the blower motor.

Don't wait too long, because a worn out blower motor can also burn out the fan controller amp.

Got the blower motor in a few weeks back. I went aftermarket @ advanced auto for $81.80. I do not plan on keeping this Q for another winter as I am close to 300k. the only available blower motor was that of the 1993-1996 models. I am running a 92. The actual motor itself fit fine and works fine. Only issue was the opening for the cooler hose to the motor is on the opposite side. So I just retrofitted a longer hose to solve this issue. Is this an actual difference within the Q line or is it just an aftermarket design gone wrong? The spout is on the left side of the blower motor on the 1992. the 1993-1996 models is it on the right?

Been a long time since I replaced mine on the 96, but I think it is also on the left side if I recall correctly.

You can flip the motor and just plug it in. I am sure the connector will reach. Its been a long time since I did this job.

Cannot simply flip the motor itself. It will not mount up properly with all 3 holes. There is only ONE fitment with the triangular pattern that works. Trust me I was having a grand ole time trying every possible way.
