Ok, here is the low-down.

I will be cruising along in 5th gear. When I down shift into 4th and let off the clutch, there is a LOUD LOUD clunk noise coming from the rear end. As a matter of fact, it will do it regardless of what gear I am starting out in. So even going from 4th to 3rd and 3rd to 2nd downshifting, it still clunks. Under acceleration, it really does not do it. It may do it a tiny tad, but not near as much as it does when downshifting. Now, I just got this car today. I use to drive a 96 Maxima (FWD), so this RWD stuff is new to me.

Does anyone have an idea of where I should start to look? I was told by my good friend to check my universal joints on the driveshaft. But, for some odd reason, it feels like the clunking is more on the drivers rear side, but I don't know. I know that there is one shot (broken/torn) rubber exhaust hanger on the muffler that may be causing the muffler to pop up into the axle/body of the car, but that is a total guess.

Anyone have any clues before I start on this? Is this kinda common to happen? Thanks all for your help with this.

If it happens during drivetrain load transitions(switching gears, backing on and off the throttle, inspect all the drivetrain components in the rear. It could be as simple as loose driveshaft/halfshaft bolts to a loose diff mount, etc. Inspect anything and everything you can see. It will probably be fairly apparent once you take a closer look.

It is your subframe bushings. Get yourself a set of hard spacers and problem will be fixed. Does it feel like the rear end floats a little in the turns?

Where exactly are the subframe bushings located at? I am going to the junkyard tomorrow morning. And I will get what I need from the one 240sx there. Thanks for your help.

I was told by my shop that the transmission mount may be shot and to replace that first. Sound good? Thanks.
