looking for some help. About 4 or 5 times now, i have heard a loud bang coming from the rear of the car. Feels and Sounds like i was just rear ended. Not sure if its the transmission or what. But every time that I felt it, i have actually look at my rear view mirror thinking I was just hit. The thing is that its so intermittent, that I don't know how to recreate the problem.

Has anyone ever felt anything like this? Any suggestions what it could be or what I can check?

Thanks

Maybe the rear differential? That's the only thing that I can think of... I suppose the banging can also be from your suspension.

This has happened to me a few times as well. I have no idea what the heck it is but it isn't suspension. More likely rear differential or transmission.

As the OP says its feels like you've been rear ended, each time it happend when accelerating from a stop.

Could it be a backfire? They can get really loud. If you dont really feel anything like a jolt or bump, then it sounds like it would be back firing.

I've also heard the bang coming from the back of my M. I believe its just a quirk related to the rear suspension. The only time I hear it is when Im taking a right hand corner and the rear wheel hit a pothole.

It's not a backfire and it ain't suspension.

Its feels like the rear diff or transmission slips for a split second and then engages.

Time for a dealer visit. Looks like there is a TSB to take care of this problem:
ITB08018
IF YOU CONFIRM: A "clicking" noise is coming from the left and/or right rear axle (driveshaft) when accelerating from a stop.
Refer to the Service Procedure in this bulletin for details. NOTE: This is the only approved service procedure to repair this incident.

This is when I hear it too. Word for word exactly what I experience. I have learned to just go right easy and once I make the turn to accelerate. It only happens when pulling out of places that aren't flat with the road. If I pull out of a street onto another street, it's fine. But if I pull out of a gas station or something (where there is a ledge or drainage dip or something) and punch it going right, that's when it happens.

If this car was FWD, I don't think it would happen. It's something with the power being transferred to the back at that exact moment.

I can't say the loud bang happens to me under these circumstances. It's happened to me 3 times since I've owned the car in the last 2 years and each time I was just taking off from a stop.

Thank you guys for the info. I will keep the lookout so when it happens again, i can see what the road conditions are and what i am doing. Anyone know what they do to fix the TSB ITB08018 issue?
