Loud 1981 datsun pickup

I just got his truck from my mom's estate. I have never been in it before. It just seems noisy when I turn the engine on when I'm sitting in the truck. I expected it to be quiet. Is this normal?

I'd recommend checking the exhaust pipe first for holes, cracks or anything which will allow engine noise to escape before the muffler (the big cylindrical shape under the truck).
If that's okay, check your idle speed - is the engine running too fast?
