Hey fellas, this is my first post on this forum, previsouly a member of tt.net. I had an engine fire in my violet pearl blue 300z this summer. I just bought a 95 240sx se last week. I knew it had a few problems, but its loaded and has low miles and I only paid $2500 for it. I just got back from the mechanic who told me that it is leaking oil from the front main, the rear main and possibly a few other places. He suggested a $1500 job to pull the motor and reseal em all.

I am fairly a n00b at cars, but i love working on them. My buddy and I replaced the injectors on my 300z this summer, which is no easy task. Also a few waterpumps here and there. Otherwise not a lot of experience.

Would you guys do this yourselves or pay to have it done? Pain-in-the-*** rating? Thanks for your advice! Sorry for the long post.

Removing engine is fun for the whole family.

If you have all the equipment (lift, cherry picker) then by all means tear into the b1tch and replace all them seals and pat yourselves on the back when you saved yourself $1500.

I am currently in the middle of replacing my front seal as I'm writing this. It doesn't seem to be too crappy of a job, but I'm not done yet and anything could happen. The rear seal involves removing the transmission but there is a great how-to posted on the http://www.240sx.org site. Once you replace those seals, have the motor steam cleaned and then get under there yourself to source any other leaks. It might not hurt to replace the oil pan gasket.

Assuming you have all the tools, the cost should be $25 for all the seals and $50 for a steam clean. That's a hell of a lot cheaper than $1500!!!

Good luck.

Yeah! Pull that sucka out and have some fun! If you don't have a lift and feel like doing it.. you can sometimes rent them, look in your yellow pages :)

are you even sure that it is leaking oil mechanics tend to say **** just to get you to pay some money to them make sure you are leaking oil . the obvious oils spots when you park, burning oil smell when you drive , checking the oil often and see if the oil level drops. but if you know for a fact it is leaking oil then everything i just said was useless :)

well i got another estimate from some guys that know i will do it myself if they **** me around to bad... $600. I am thinking not too bad, since i don't have a garage or an engine hoist nor a cherry picker. Anyways, yes it is actually leaking oil... i noticed it and took it in to find out what it was that was leaking. thanks for the suggestions.

Boss,

The only thing that you need is a friend's garage. Believe me, I know from experience. There isn't a single oil leak that would require the motor to be pulled. It's a hell of lot easier, yes, but necessary? No.

I just finished up that front seal this afternoon.......time intensive but I'm paying somebody $50 an hour!!
