Just got the s420det blacktop running in the 95s14. LOTS OF BLUE SMOKE!It smokes on idle, and smokes on acceleration. I let it idle for 5 minutes, than drove it for 6-7 minutes, still plenty of smoke. I have no idea how long the engine was warehoused before I got it. It came from Japan w less than 50k miles. Pulled the plugs, there is a lot of oil on cyl #4 plug, the rest look great.I did a compression test - I get 150 on cyl #4, 155PSI on the other 3 cylinders.Pulled the exaust manifold- oil seeping from cylinder #4 exaust port. No oil in the radiator.

With oil on the spark plug, I know I have a problem w cyl 4- but could this much oil be coming from just bad valve seals? Normally, if it is a bad valve seal, you get smoke on idle and it goes away on acceleration. If bad rings, smoke on acceleration, but not at idle. I smoke no matter what.

Maybe a combination of things?

Yeah, prolly a combination of things. It doesn't take much oil to create a cloud. Any smoke from burn off shouldn't last longer than 5-10 minutes.

So, any one have a sequence of things to look at- replace?I was thinking of starting w the valve stem seals- for $65 I can get a set of OEM, and just replace all of 'em. It's a completely stock engine.

Next, maybe the turbo seals?

What else could it be?

I doubt your turbo is doing it as you would have oil spewed in the intake which would mean oil in all cylinders and not just one. You are getting good compression thus I kinda doubt it is a ring problem. I would concentrate on the head first. Have you pulled the valve cover to see if there is anything obvious going on?

The motor was probably upside down for an extended period at some point, but to be on the safeside you may want to do a leakdown test to see if you are having a leaky valve seal. The seal can leak but the seat will still hold compression.

Are you thinking I might have a crack in the cyl head around #4? If there is a crack in the cyl head that leads into the intake on #4, this could explain the oil. It would also explain the great compression. It would also explain why the smoke doesn't go away when accelerating.

the plug on # 4 is very wet w oil- suprising it even fires. When we took off the exaust manifold, there was some wet oil in the #4 exaust manifold passage.
