Hey Gang,

So my Coupe has been setting in my garage for like a month now because I have lost both so called smartkeys. After searching endlessly I have now given up hope on finding them. My dealer says the vehicle will need to be towed in to the dealership to have a new key programmed. This is such a hasstle not to mention expensive. Has anyone else been in my position?

When they sell you the car they usually give you a small metal tag with a code on it on one of the keychains. This is the code to get a new ikey programmed, if you have this you shouldn't need to bring the whole car to the dealership, just give them that tag and they'll get you a new ikey. Atleast i'm pretty sure...

You would actually be surprised at how common this is. If there are no keys at all and you have no clue where they could possibly be. You will need to have it towed to the dealer. When the keys are programmed they are programmed to the car itself.

That's some sh*t luck though sorry to hear that. Good luck with the hunt.

purchase a metal detector and scan the yard and house with it until you come up with something. perhaps they're in a hamper or the sofa ate um. Keep looking! If the car made it home, the keys had to as well.

Not necessarily....

Driver starts car (has key with hiim) gets out to do anything, drops key in sewer without noticing, gets back into car and drives home.

Car is at home.. key is not.

Only need the key to start.. not to drive it!

had this happen to me once.. i was going away on business..i drove to the airport.. got out, grabed suitcases... kissed wife goodby... she got in drivers seat and headed home. She stopped for a coffee.. shut off car and went in. Came out.. and luckily she had her fob, or wouldnt have been abel to start the car again.

There is also the fact that you don't necessarily need to be driving to have your keys with you. If you go out without driving, and drop your keys then they're not at home anymore!

Yes but if you drive for any amount of time with the key NOT in the car, the warning light will come on. If he started his car at, say, a gas station, dropped his keys then drove off, I doubt he would've made it all the way home without noticing the "No Key" warning light go off.

Why did you not get a replacement after you lost the first fob? I've lost traditional car keys before and used my spare, but one of the first places I went was to the hardware store to get another spare made!

I was talking about if you're not in your car. So lets say if you get a ride from a friend but have your car keys with you and then lose them when you're out.

And how could you not drive your car for a month?? The altima's such a sweet ride, i wouldn't be able to stand not driving it for a few days! I would have gone to the dealership for a new ikey after a week max.

How much is it to replace a smartkey? I've already lost one, and if I lose the other I'll be in the same situation. I should really get on replacing the lost key.
