Lost of horsepower and pick-up

Why have I lost horsepower and pick-up since I've bought my car? Is this just wear and tear on the engine and something all cars experience? I used to have a Pontiac Bonneville and experienced the same loss of power. What is the cause of this loss of power?What can I do to regain the lost power?
