Lost Odyssey... anyone play it yet? I picked it up yesterday and I'm loving it. It reminds me of the days when turn-based RPGs were king. I personally prefer turn-based over action RPGs. Anybody else feel this way?

I need to look more into this game. I love RPGs and definitely prefer turn based RPGs over ARPGs. I've only heard good things so far.

I'm really tempted, but I'd only be able to afford a rent. Well. Maybe not even that. College freaking bled me dry.

Either way, I wanna try it =(

If you can, it's definitely worth a play. I haven't enjoyed a traditional RPG this much since Final Fantasy X.

I've never enjoyed any turn based RPG's.I can do action based if the action is at least decent.

The only place IMO a turn based RPG belongs is on a handheld, something where you are going to be looking up and away frequently or where you can set it down and come back to it when you want to. Lost Odyssey doesn't interest me and the commercial annoys me.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

Nothing more fun than WATCHING the battle while sitting back and selecting menu options. Yahtzee said it best when he compared JRPG gameplay to "listening to the Star Wars soundtrack while huffing nitrous oxide and looking at an excel spreadsheet."Totally unappealing. It's sad that they've become such a fad. It'd be nice to see someone develop an ACTION RPG with some story depth and interesting characters. But the only RPGs that seem to get decent treatment these days are the JRPGs that put you to sleep during the combat phases so you end up unconscious through the good parts anyway.

And if I have to hear that stupid White Rabbit ad one more time I'm going to scream. That song already makes my ears bleed without the brain-bleeding "what does this have to do with a JRPG?!" pointlessness. I mean, this game wasn't even highly anticipated. Why does the ad run every 3 minutes? It's not like it's some Halo-parallel fanboy bastion. I think someone got confused and thought they were advertising the cure for the common cold or something people would get excited about. (Okay, that's a bit harsh, sure some people were looking forward to it...but the ad campaign seems insanely aggressive for the game it's promoting.)

But anyway, I actually didn't come in here to rip on the game like a jerk. I just stopped in to offer my opinion on the "turn based vs action/real-time rpg" topic. I'll go away and let you enjoy your game now.

You don't like turn baised, I don't like action based. It's all good that's why there's both. Thanks for the input.

Personally i think turn baised RPGs are more strategy oriented than action RPGs. That's what I like about them. I feel like action rpgs are more about grinding and gaining levels than really thinking out your actions. But i guess i'm in the minority. But hey... if it wasnt for competion, nothing would ever improve, right?

Definitely more potential for strategy. Absolutely.None have been done to suit my tastes yet, though.

As for grinding...I associate that as much with turn-based RPGs as I do with action rpgs. The difference is that it goes more quickly in action-based ones. Nothing like running around doing random battles in FF just so you can have a chance at not getting obliterated by the next story boss. There's no fun to be had there. Just tedium. But that's true of action RPGs, too. Certainly most recent action RPG games have been horribly flat and mindless. Very disappointing.

I like the IDEA behind turn-based RPGs. I just haven't found any that hold my interest like, say, Diablo still does.

Totally off-topic:LOL at the game being advertised below this thread. "Last Chaos"? That's the absolute worst name I've ever heard in my life. These low-budget online games are really sad.

personally I can't stand ARPGs, Kingdom Hearts the only one omitted. After growing up with FFVII in my veins, turn-based is the only way to go. as previously stated, it really makes you concentrate on a more strategic approach to battles. It deepens fight sequences when you have to take into consideration the right time to attack/defend, when to heal, conserving your MP to use on a later turn, etc. I like the turn-based world. if I wanted to play a hack'n'slash/button masher, I'd go play GOW or DMC. I don't want no weird @ss, hybrid mix of both. ......but of course, to each his own.

but yeah, Lost Odyssey looks pretty cool to me. what's this annoying ad that we all speak of? sorry, don't watch too much tv.

I didn't know it had 4 discs. That's pretty cool. It's been a while since I've seen a (new) multi-disc game.

..why would it be cool to have more discs? I mean if they were bonus discs or something, yeah that'd be cool. but having to replace the disc for the next mid-game is not something I would consider "cool". yeah, FFVII was a 3-disc game, but that was because they didn't have the technology we do now. but that's not an excuse nowadays. why would it be cool to have more discs now?

More discs alone isn't cool. The sheer amount of game content implied by more discs is cool.

yeah from the way i have been playing now, i figure theres about 10 hours of game play on each disc, depending how much overleveling you like to do, and all that jazz.

hmm, 40 hours of gameplay? that's pretty decent.. but is it quality gameplay? anyway, it's nowhere near FFVII's 100+ hours of glorious storytelling though

Well, I'm about 2 hours into Lost Odyssey and I have to say that it's as though the developers set out to create Mass Effect's direct opposite. M.E. was RTRPG, had okay visuals, future-tech setting, fairly grounded (or flat) party members, lots of freedom, and FANTASTIC writing. Lost Odyssey is Turn-based (as stated above, I know), has FANTASTIC visuals, magi-punk/fantasy setting, over-the-top party members, NO freedom, and HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE writing.

Even if it's a translation, it's still piss-poor.

That said, despite its kluginess and play-on-a-short-leash irritating-beyond-description gameplay, there is something....intriguing....about it. Like after I'm done with the game I might be recruited by the Star League to devend the frontier against Xur and the Kodan armada or something.
