Hello everyone!

I lost both keys to my 2008 nissan rogue. But somehow luckily I have the little metal tag with the 5 digit number. I called a dealership and they told me i would have to get my car towed and they would have to replace the entire system?? Do I actually need to get my car towed to the dealership or can I get keys made without needing to bring the car there? Thanks

I regret to say, the answer is yes it will have to be towed to the dealership. In order for the vehicle to recognize the new keys, it must be at the dealership. There's an anti-theft chip in the key fob that your vehicle has to be programmed to accept, otherwise your engine will be immobilized.

Do you know if an entire lock system needs to be replaced or it can simply just be towed and all that needs to be done are keys to be programmed?

just programming for the remotes.

if you want the keys inside the remotes to work = you will need to replace the tumblers in the locks & the ignition (unless they can order a key for your car, that might be Vin-specific. thats IF nissan offers such)

I would definitely try a locksmith that advertises anti-theft key fobs before paying the dealer a penny. I don't know if they'd be able to manufacture a proper working key based on the five-digit code alone, but it's worth investigating.

5.56 doesn't know what they are talking about. You don't need to replace any of your locks. The metal tag contains the numbers for the cut code of the key blade that goes into the back of the remote, even if you didn't have the metal tag any Nissan dealership can look this up by your VIN.
The dealership will cut them for free if you purchase the blade. You will have to have the vehicle at the dealership and pay for the remotes and programming.
