Well as many of you know, tonight was the season finale for Lost on ABC. It was a 2 1/2 hour segment that kept me glued to the TV and I think I understand it, but I'm curious to see what others may have interpreted the ending to be.

I interpreted the ending (in relation to the whole story) to be the survivors final and successful escape from a place equivalent to purgatory. That's right, I believe that all the character have been dead since the very beginning and we are seeing their lives after life evolve on a supernatural scale.

I think that I got it understood but even my own understand leaves some questions behind. So if there is anyone who got a better understanding from the show this evening, feel free to elaborate!

But! I'm also interested to hear the thoughts and remarks of everyone else.

Discuss.

I'm sad :( I've kept up with the show for many years and loved every minute. Sad to see it go.

The creators have said in the past that they are not dead, it's not just a dream/purgatory/hell. The way I saw it, the events on the island were all real, the man in black was the embodiment of evil, and the real hell that lived below the island, and Jacob was the embodiment of good. The flash-sideways were the real purgatory that the main characters created for themselves, and exists outside of time. Like Christian said, they all died, just not at the same time, but they are able to exist in that same world.

I agree with Loki. The events on the island and that life were what happened to everyone and the flash-sideways was the in-between that the main characters created. The flash-sideways started when most of them crossed paths, on Oceanic 815, and the most eventful time of their lives. Some died on the island, some survived, but they all met back up when they were ready to let go and move on. The ones that left on the plane and who stayed on the island at the end probably lived a long life afterwards, but as Christian said, everyone dies.

He wasn't ready to move on(to heaven).

They didn't all died when the plane first crashed. All the stuff did really happened.

The side way flashes is what threw most people off. Basically the side way flash is like a different dimension of reality where everyone are dead. They all died at different times(in real time), ie: Jack died when the plane escaped; Ben and Hurley died after they spend their life time looking over the island, that's why Hurley said Ben was a great number 2.

It is a bit confusing because the side way flashes where they were all dead started in the beginning of season 6, where everyone was still alive in real time. Reason why is because like Christian Shepard said, time didn't exist here, meaning the side way flashes.

Inside of the tunnel, it could either bless or curse someone depending on their heart. That's why Men In Black turned into a smoke monster, and Jack was able to survive, and wished to die eventually knowing that he had done his job to make sure everyone was able to escape. Desmond was the constant, he's always been the constant, in time travel and everything. He's significant in every way. He can withstand that radiation, and even be aware of everything in the past and the future, which is why Daniel wanted him as his constant in time travel. :dblthumb:

I followed the first 3 seasons really closely. Season 3 got so dumb, I didn't feel like watching the fourth, and haven't followed any of the show since. From your comments here, it sounds like the last two seasons have been spent doing the same crap season 3 did: wasting time and not advancing the plot at all.

I'll probably watch this when the show is over and all the DVDs are out, so I can avoid the annoying cliffhangers.

Okay i never saw any of the episodes at all, i dont watch tv much and when i heard there were aliens or some such crap i decided i would never waste a minute on it. But my girlfriend (who has also never seen any) wanted to watch it when i accidentally flipped by it. Worst hour of my life. That show sucks. Way too dramatic and retarded. She cried (like Nala) when the dog laid down next to the dying guy. I told her shes a p**** (like Nala) And why was the wavy-black-haired girl in heaven? It looked like she rode away on that plane? And where the hell did the second plane come from anyways? Aliens fix the first one or another one landed there?
Anywho, im glad i didnt waste any time on that series.

i dont understand why haters insist on 'wasting' their time bashing and/or asking questions. if you dont like it, stfu and gtfo, stop wasting MY time reading your pointless responses.

that being said, the series has nothing to do with aliens.

Seriously, WTF. You have watched no other episode except for the SERIES FINALE and you expect to be able to keep up, when you already have a poorly conceived and blatantly wrong view of the show?? GTFO toolbag.

What I want to know is why does the island exist at the bottom of the ocean in purgatory?

I agree. In my opinion season 1 and 2 was the best. I followed through the rest of the seasons because I had it on Netflex, I wanted to see how they're going to end it.

Because the island eventually sank. That's why it's in purgatory. It's confusing because the purgatory started when everyone hasn't died yet in real time.

To answer a few questions here, ben didn't go in the church because he's not ready to move on yet...he's probably gonna stay and live with his daughter and russo as a happy nuclear family...same with ana lucia, she's not ready to move on yet, she's till a crooked cop.

miles, eko, walt, michael to name a few weren't in the church becuase not everybody is ready to move on yet...that's why the only guy who walked out of the church and into the light was christian shephard, he finally got his closure in tell his son what he needed to know and moved on...everbody else was still sitting there...when they are ready they will walk out to the next plane of existance.

oh and the island in the ocean in the first episode of this season is not really important...the writers just wanted to tell you that the island was in no way shape or form responsible for the events in the flashsideways.

if i was really good at editing i would take the whole last season and delte any scenes from the flash sideways and watch it like that...it wouldn't confuse dumb people and you can take the show for what it is without the whole purgatory-limbo.

So, let me get this straight: The island was f***' purgatory? And the series finale was like rah rah everybody's favorite characters are back?

What. The. f***. Why not have John Locke wake up in bed having dreamed the whole thing?

I, like MoD, stopped at season 3. I was planning on finishing the show, but now? The ending was a f***' fan service moment!

The writers got what they wanted... everyone is talking about it.

I felt it was lame.

JKL #2 was the best ending.

I liked the final episode, but my favorite was still the first couple of seasons. All in all, I give it a 9 out of 10. The show had what was probably the most fleshed-out characters in the history of television.

The only other TV show I've watched besides Lost that had a plot worth shaking a stick at is Battlestar Galactica. Most everything else on TV is absolute garbage, like all those commercials ABC aired for "the bachelorette" during Lost.

lolol have fun touching yourself to Jersey Shore and 16 and Pregnant. I have yet to see a really intelligent criticism against lost. EVERYONE that I've talked to that hates it has absolutely no understanding of the show and bashes the most idiotic things. Like Hurley never losing weight, or them never getting rescued. Lost has flaws, I know, but I thoroughly enjoyed the show during its run.

The way I understood it though was that the Island served as the plug for the literal Hell, and without it the world would basically end. I guess it doesn't really matter as the context of the flashsideways all amounts to a dream, pretty much. It feels like one of the many moments in which the writers didn't actually know where they were going with it, but it was an awesome moment when it was first aired. Eh.

Also, just putting it out there, I too hated Season 3. This was the time during the writer's strike when they didn't have a clue how long they were going to be doing this show for, so we got a lot of really stupid storylines because of it.. The end of S3 stepped it up and got better though, most notably the first Ben Linus flashbacks, "The Brig", and "The Man From Tallahassee".
