Lost 4th Gear!

Shifted into drive on the freeway from 3rd at about 65 mph. Car went into forth, than dropped hard into third. Repeated, and now it won't shift into drive at all. Lever will, but the transmission won't.

Well maintained 95Q, with 150K. Have about 30K on the mobil 1 since last flush.

I'm curious why (mechanically) it won't shift into 4th, and how long I can expect 1-3 gears to work? Reason I ask is I'm hoping to get a few more months out of it, as I have a car lined up than.

Anyone have a transmission for sale?

How does the ATF look/smell? When's the last time you changed the filter?

Direct [3rd] gear is TCU fail safe..................Consult diagnosis should tell the tale.

150k is decent life/interval although well maintainted and mucho highway drive can last to 200k+.

The ATF & filter were changed 30K ago. I always do a flush with a pan drop filter change every 30K with Mobil 1. I was hoping to get 200K out of the transmission but it must have not been changed in the first 45K miles prior to my purchase back in 2000.Mostly freeway miles...commuted about 90 miles round trip for 4 years.I suspect that is the reason I lost 4th gear first?transmission is not locked in 3rd...as it shifts from 1 to 2 to 3.Any guesses to how long I can drive it this way? Any problems driving at 3200 rpm's on freeway?

Other than a dip in fuel economy, there's no ill effects from 3k on the interstate.
