To preface, my battery is just fine and there is no problem with bad gas. When I am driving my car will suffer a temporary loss of acceleration (lasts 1-2 seconds). The car loses speed during that time as well as the rpms drop to near zero. After 1-2 seconds the car resumes normal operations. Also, a few times the car won't start (battery not the problem). It's getting enough juice, it just won't turn over. If I give it 30 minutes, it will start.

Today, driving down the road, the car suffered a complete loss of acceleration, rpms to zero; I had to coast to the shoulder. Car did not respond at all to depressing the accelerator. Radio and AC were still working and car was still idling. However, there was a loss of power steering. I turned car off and had same problem starting it as stated above. I sat there for about 30 minutes and it started up just fine and I was able to drive home.

I have not had the opportunity to pull codes yet. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Good Morning -

Sorry it has taken this long to to respond. You post landed in the Q45 forum. The correct forum for an I35 question is at the link below. A moderator may be able to move your post to the forum where the I35 experts roam.

Since I also have a 99 model I30 (similar but not identical to your I35), I'll try to clarify a couple of items with questions below.

1) If the engine stopped running while you were driving, the power steering failure was due to the engine stopping while the car was rolling and you needed to steer.

2) How many miles does the car have?

3) Are you the original owner?

4) How long has it been since the fuel filter was changed?

I've seen a similar situation like this occur on other cars when the electric fuel pump was starting to fail. With any fuel pump, it is not a matter of IF but a matter of WHEN it will eventually fail.

The car's ECU should store some codes from a recent failure if one has occurred. It looks like your are on the way to getting codes checked.

Hopefully we can get this thread moved to the I35 forum.

Thanks CS. Just curious, how much does it cost to replace the fuel pump and/or filter? I am the original owner. Car has 175k miles. I'm certain I've had this work done before but can't remember when.

An OEM fuel pump from from a discount Infiniti supplier looks to run $252.68 + Strainer Set $18.26 + Sealer Ring $10.45.

Bosch or Denso pumps for the 2002 model runs from $69 to $99 depending on supplier.

One of our members with a Q45 and over 300,000 miles has received good service from a Bosch pump.

Here's a video of a guy changing the fuel filter (he's all but changing the pump) on an I35/Maxima. Though I don't think the fuel filter will cause the car to stop running like yours, it is a good maintenance practice to change it periodically.

Check out the video below. I think you will find his comments interesting.

I would also like one of our I35 experts to chime in as the issue could be caused by something different and less costly to replace like a fuel pressure regulator or fuel damper. I've seen cases where a fix for my I30 or Q45 (while in the ball park) are not always the cause of an I35 issue. I don't want to steer you wrong.
