Well looks like my trucks age is catching up with itself. My 87 d21 with the 2.4 5speed has been losing about a quart a month and giving a little fit of blue smoke after the first start of the day but otherwise no smoke throughout the day. I am guessing it may be my piston rings.. but hoping it's not. Is there anything you would recommend to help refresh them?

It does sound like your rings are starting to wear out.

There are a bunch of "snake oils" out there that can "fix" the problem or mask it, but honestly most of them end up doing more harm than good. I would keep feeding it oil until it gets worse because a quart a month really isn't that awful. If you plan on rebuilding it after it gets worse, i'd avoid the additives but if you plan on going another route then you could try throwing some Lucas Oil Stabilizer in it or some Restore to squeeze some more time out of it.

If you check the plug's,, you may be able to tell which cylinder is haveing the Oil Blowby. course it could be all 4,, but the plug's should tell that as well.

I would try to get it taken care of,, cause the oil blowby,, might creat more problem's,, like with the Catalytic Converter's.

How many mile's on your Hardbody now?

I do plan on rebuilding the engine at a later date. maybe even slide something in that has a lil more power but for now I am using it as a DD back and fourth to work

Do you run regular conventional oil in it? If you do i'd try some Lucas Oil Stabilizer first. It's basically motor honey, but it won't do any damage by adding it. If it doesn't seem to improve things by the next oil change, then it will drain out when you change the oil. Next time you need to add a quart of oil, just use Lucas to top it off instead.

Worn valve guides will also cause blue smoke at start up. Short trips can cause oil break down. Check the oil to make sure gas is not entering the pan through the fuel system. Oil is cheap compared to overhauling the engine.

Well it happened..I kept adding oil to it and this afternoon one of my piston rings went and it now smokes no matter the throttle give. Looks like a rebuild is closer than I anticipated
