Hey guys,

My first post .

My 02 Pathfinder been giving me some gas mileage problems. I'm getting about 300+km/80L tank. I've stop flooring the SUV often and been driving like a granny to save on gas. But even that doesn't give me better mileage. Just wondering if any one had a familiar problem on there ride.

Can you hear a misfire or feel it. Why not change the spark plugs.

Well, gas mileage goes down in the winter, at least in Canada. The cold weather, different gas formulas, change in driving habits, reliance on 4x4... all contribute to lower economy.

To optimize gas mileage, plug in your Pathy when it's extremely cold out, and keep on top of your maintenance schedule. Best thing I did was change the spark plugs around 120,000km... spent $60 on the plugs but saved that much in gas within two months.

whens the last time you did a tune up?

everything effects gas consumption.

- dirty air filter- fouled 02 sensor(s) (sometimes they stop working or start to read less efficiently, for example, the o2 sensor doesn't heat up properly.)- spark plugs getting old. when you take them out and if they are black, your running rich.- dizzy cap and rotor to ensure efficient spark- clean engine and transmission oil/fluid.- properly inflate tires- get rid of extra weight in the vehicle... that means all that weight you put on from the holiday turkey.

also , driving in winter does consume more gas as you are running more accesories, cranking the heat esp the front windshield defog.

****... corner gas is on... be back in 30 minutes to finish.

edit.. haha... okay back, i love that show.

let's see.. - a dirty/old fuel filter- dirty/failing injectors

there is a few things im missing, but when i remember i will post.

Something's wrong and it ain't how you're driving. I'd be pissed if I didn'tget at least 300 MILES from a tank on my '01 (unless I was towing my boat), and I havea lead foot. Replace the air filter, pull the plugs and have a look (but pull thecoil off and blow them out with compressed air real good before pulling theplug, sand gets in there and you don't want it going in the spark plug hole.).Pull the codes even if the SES light isn't on.

'02 doesn't have a distributor cap and rotor, individual coils on each spark plug.

nnorton44: Fix the misfire or you'll be buying an expensive cat.

Why buy 97 octane? Nissan says 91.

Sparkplugs is DIY. I've done it on my '01 PF. You pull the coil off, blow out thehole with compressed air, and then take the plug out with a spark plug socketand a long extension (they are way down in a hole). Be sure to torque to spec, and use Anti-Sieze compound on the threads.

Fuel filter is tricky but doable. It's a bit hard to get at to get the hoses off. Andthe fuel inside is under pressure and goes everywhere when the hose comesoff (there's a process in the FSM to relieve the pressure. Dumb me didn't. ButI don't think it's fuel filter. You'd see poor running and a lean condition atmax fuel flow (probably about 5500 RPM floored). It might well throw a SESlight for lean. It would probably run just fine down the freeway (about 30%fuel flow).
