When you buy a new alternator, you pay a deposit fee. When you bring in your old one, you get $ back. So its your call whether or not just to take out the old one first, and save a trip to the store.
This would be a good time to upgrade/replace your battery cables, if you haven't already.
Good luck!
When a alternator or starter is needed, it is always better to take your vehicle to a shop that rebuilds them. They bench test both before and after the rebuild. If the windings are ok, they just replace bearings, diodes, & lubricate. There is not much to them & not only is it cheaper but you have a better chance of not getting a defective one or paying the markup from a regular auto supply store.
