Hey guys, I got a 1992 nissan stanza with 174,000miles on it. It has never burnt or leaked any oil before. Here's the story, on what has happened to it, and I'm sorry if it is long, but I will try to explain in detail what happened.

~ 3 weeks ago I check oil level along with tire pressure, and everything is fine and dandy.

Friday night, was my brothers bachelor party and I was driving and the stanz was doing good. However I left the party early, because I'm not 21 and everybody else was in bar part of a restraunt:rolleyes . So I was just dropped of at home, and left my car there for them to use(some of them were not drinking), cause they need it to haul around some of the people. Next mourning I wake up, get ready for my bro's wedding. Start my car, and it sounds like a freaking diesel engine. But it still runs fine besides the noise. I can't worry about it though, because I have to get to the wedding so I drive it anyways. Later, on the way to the recption, I stop at a gas station and check the oil level. Nothing even shows up on the dipstick, I'm ****ty. What the hell happened to all my oil? I'm thinking yippie, my lifters are screwed if not more. I put about 2.5 quarts of oil into it to get it to the correct level. The ticking(which is coming from underneath my valve cover) quiets down but is still there. I can't really inspect it much more then that because I'm still in a rented tuxedo that I don't want to get dirty. Drive it home late that night and go to bed. Today, I decide time to work on it. Ticking still there, but not as loud. No loss of power, and it idles and runs fine. It hasn't left any puddles of oil under my car, and blows no blue smoke. However if you let it sit in one spot running it drips(a very fast drip) what looks like a mixture of water an oil (unburnt). When ever whatever it is that comes out of my tailpipe dries, it just looks like black soot. There is no oil in my coolant, and my spark plugs look normal. What is going on here, or if you were me what would you check next? How screwed up is my car? Sorry its so long of post, I just wanted to make sure I gave you guys the whole picture.

first the soot out the pipe over a long idle period is normal. it is carbon and water . the water is created during the burn process.

if your oil level is dropping you are loosing it somewhere. it is either leaking from a seal or its being burnt. check around the front cover and the crank seals. and the valve cover. if there is absolulty no sign of a leak then you have to be burning it.

cool, I have never heard of that or noticed that before. guess you do learn something new everyday.

As far as leaks I guess I will have to get looking for it. The leak must of just started like that Friday or so, because I have never seen any puddles under my car before. I might have been too busy to notice them this weekend though. If I was burning it, I would be seeing smoke right? Becuase she doesn't smoke at all. Anyways thanks for the help.

Also you think the ticking noise is air in the lifters. Are they permantly damaged? Is it safe to drive my car with them like that or should I have them replaced?

the noise should go away if you have the right oil level. It may take a little time but it should disapate. permanatly damaged yes and no. they obviously took some wear from being dry. will it have any real effect on your cars drivability? not likely.
