I was changing the oil today on my sohc fastback and just casually looked up towards the radiator while i was under it. The lower radiator hose is composed of a hose about 4 inches long, then some sort of metal connecter with a wiring harness hanging off of it, and then another longer radiator hose that goes into the engine. The metal t shaped thing has an unplugged wiring harness, and it is all dirty and corroded which leads me to beleive it has been unplugged for a while now. I looked up a little farther and there was another harness hanging down from somewhere, and the two will hook up to each other. My car seems to be running fine the way it is, but what does this do? Is it some type of coolant temperature gauge? Should I plug it in or leave it unplugged? I left it unplugged for now, but im thinking i should hook it up just for the heck of it. Any help is appreciated.

yeah

save the game, then clean the contacts, reconnect, and turn the car on. if the car explodes and you die, don't worry, that's what you saved the game for. just load up the saved game, so you won't even have messed with it.

I looked on my '90 fastback, my lower radiator goesradiator -> short peice of tube -> t-connector, with thermostat (I guess) on top -> tube to engine

my wires are connected, so go ahead and do it after you clean them. and do it when the car is cold too, wouldn't wanna burn yourself

that is a temp switch for the AC condensor fan... if it senses 200-206F the switch closes and the fan goes on. Of course, there is another switch to control the electric fan's operation, but i'm not sure on that one.

I looked this up for another member a few months back & verified it w/ my car & FSM.

ricebike is correct, it is a thermal switch for the electric fan behind the bumper.

Only the '89-'90 had this switch; the later years were wired completely differently.

I wonder why it was disconnected? Maybe the fan bearings were bad and a previous owner unplugged it so it wouldn't blow fuses? Just wild speculation.

Also note--The '89-'90 electric fan will not turn on unless that thermal hose switch and the A/C relay both have continuity.
