I just purchased my 2nd 240sx, but this one is stick. The shifter is verry loose from side to side, and it often causes the gears to grind. I heard something about a polyurethane ball joint or bushing thats down under the shifter that I can replace real cheap, is this true, and if so how would I do it (remove console and shifter plate?). My second problem is that my reverse gear gets stuck and I have to jolt on the clutch to get it out or rev the engine to make it wiggle to get it out of reverse, what is my problem there. Thank you guys for this site it has been such a big help to me and my 240's.

Thank You,

Chris K.

yea you can access it from inside the car. pop out the bezel around the shifter. lift it and you will see 4 10mm bolts with a phillips head. take these out and slide that boot up now you will see a smaller boot with a large plastic tie wrap at its base. slide the tie wrap up then pull the boot off the trans. in the round cylinder the shifter lever goes into there is a large snap ring. use a pair of snap ring pliers to compress it. while holding it compressed lift up un the shifter lever. It will slide out of the trans and at the very bottom there should be a white plastic bushing that slides into the hole in the lever in the trans. That bushing is pressed onto the end of the shifter. If it is missing all you will see at the end of the shifter is a crome shinny ball. If this is the case you need to get a new bushing. I believe it is call a "Bush socket" in the nissan parts fishe. Look down in the hole in the lever in the trans and make sure you get all the old one out before reinstalling the shifter. This bushing is very hard to install because it has to litelry expand to pop over the ball on the end of the shaft. You need to use lots of force to pop it on so dont be affraid your gonna break it while trying to pop it on it will go.
