Loose Dipstick???

I smelled burning oil on my way home from work today. I popped the hood when I got home and noticed the dipstick was loose. There was oil on the drivers side wall of the engine bay and some had dripped down to the head shield on the exhaust manifold. Is it possible for oil to spray up to the wall of the engine bay from a loose dipstick??? There was a significant amount. I wouldn't think this was possible, but wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this. Anyone know if this is possible? If not, I am definately losing oil from some place, not sure where.

I have never heard of oil actually doing that through the dip stick??!! I don't think it's possible but I could be wrong..

Actually if you have a loose dipstick, oil will spray out due to crankcase pressure. Just clean up the oil and ensure that when you check the oil, you secure the dipstick...

I've had it happen to me - I didn't put the dipstick in properly and found oil all over my engine bay.

That is very reassuring. I will clean up and make sure that is where it came from. I don't think they could have found a worse place to put that dipstick. It is a major PITA to get to.

They could have made a dipstick tube to guide the stick so the stick can be reinserted back more easier secured, just like most ATF dipsticks.
