I was trying to figure out why my belt was squealing and i noticed a bolt sticking out of what i think is the generator. The most farthest belt to the bottom of the car is connected to this. I got the bolt back through the generator and it is sticking out the other end and the nut that was on the end of it must of came loose. Can someone tell me what is supossed to go here and where i can get it from. I Have a 1990 240sx s13. I can get a picture for someone if they dont understand what i am trying to describe.

There should be a nut that is welded to an elongated (about 3/4 to 1 inch in length) piece of metal but no wider than the nut, and it should go on the back side of the alternator, where the bolt pokes through. Sounds like the alt. has shifted when the bolt came out - give this attention soon as it will abnormally wear on the belt, but more importantly, the front alt. shaft bearing.

Yup... the bolt goes through the front of the alternator and has threads on the back for the nut to go through and make it tight. You should be able to get a new nut from the dealer (it's not a typical nut) for pretty cheap. I just got done putting in a new alternator and I found out my nut was missing too. Better replace it soon, or you might end up buying a new alternator because of what 240Dave said.
