Well, more horror stories with my rebuilt motor and hte shop that installed it for me. I was driving my car home, and noticed I had no power steering. SHortly after, the car began to get a little warm. So, I pulled over, and noticed that hte belt for the ps pump was loose. I proceeded to drive it the rest of the way home, as I had no cell phone and was not in an area where I could call my parents to come get me. I got it home just fine, and when I got ithome, I popped hte hood and noticed that the crankshaft pully was about to call off my motor and all the belts were disconnected now. I took my car into my mechanic and he said that the key in the crankshaft broke, and that i would need this new key and the crankshaft pully itself too. I was uoted about 400 dollars in parts and labor and towing for this job. I want to know why this pully would just come off like that. I have a warranty on the engine and I want to know if there is an sort of fault for the mechanic who put all my accessories and pullies on the motor so I don't have to take this huge hit in my wallet. Ive had problem after problem with this car and my mechanic. What could be the possible causes for this sort of thing to happen?

I'm not Nistech, nor a tech at all. But I know the amount of force required to shear a key is too high to reasonably have happen unless it was damaged or not installed properly. (How do you not install it properly?) Barring either of these, I've never heard of a key breaking. I also agree with 240kid. It seems unlikely a properly torqued bolt would come loose even if the key was broken. You have any idea how much friction is generated by 200 ft-lbs on a crankshaft bolt? Thousands of pounds.

if the key "rolled" during his install he would have never gotten the proper torque on the bolt required to keep it on. That is very difficult to do unless you just dont check your work when your done[which alot of flat rate techs tend to not do] I am flat rate myself and have learned making mistakes like that,it is a lot more profitable not to have come backs an extra 5 mins spend going over my work can mean alot less time spent fixing an F up for free. There is no wearable part related to what broke on your car. He obviously did something wrong, But it would be interesting to see him try to reason away it was something wrong with your car that caused it. Take the estimate to him and tell him what happen. If he makes an excuse please take notes and post it back.

thank you nistech, I too didnt think there was an wearable part associated with the key in the crank. Im no tech, but I know my way around a car decently well. Im going down there tomorrow to discuss my findings.

went down there today, he decided to split the labor and towing costs with me. I will be providing the parts he needs. I guess its a better deal than having to pay for the entire thing.

Yeah I miss selling my altima now with all these problems. Hes still working on resolving my oil burning issue with this new rebuilt motor. The crankpully thing is fixed. I got a hook up on parts so I only had to pay 60 bux for labor/towing. I have the car back now, so hopefully i will get this engine thing resolved and be back to where it should be.
