Took the G sedan to the dealer for a few things. Oil change, air filters, and a broken lock on the gas door. I also had them use their dent guy to remove 4 door dings and the wife had somehow put a tear in one of the back leather seats that needed to be fixed.

So, door dings repaired was $140, seat repair was to be $85. No issues, just like to keep everything looking as good as possible. The "leather guy" took the seat to his shop, worked on the repair and brought it back to Infiniti with bad news......The tear was not a tear but where something was eating away the leather on that particular seat cushion. The thought is that something was spilled on the leather at some point in the cars life (I bought it with 40k miles on it) that was causing the leather to break down. It was so thin you could put your finger through it at that section.....He did what he could and said there would be no charge for the work but that it looked like crap.

The options were to get a new seat (>$1000), try and find a matching seat on ebay or a wrecking yard (would probably be >$200) or he could order matching material and replace the seat bottom himself for $240. So, the car is currently staying the weekend at the dealership until the seat bottom is replaced at this point.

So, for the rest of you, be careful what you carry inside the vehicle.

That's why I'm looking to buy new...Sounds like you'll get off for under $300.

What do they think did it?

Without sending it off for chemical analysis there is no way to tell.

Hahaha you guys are funny.

But on the serious note there aren't many chemical can eat their way thru leather without actually leaving vsible damage like white residue etc etc. I'd be curious maybe it was from inside. I mean the bottom portion of the leather and you know what that means. It came like that from the factory. Everybody makes scrap.

At this point I would ask the leather guy to actually look at other leather parts too. Most likely it was jst a spot but you never know. Better be ready than have a surprise.

The seat bottoms are perforated so there easily could have been something spilled and wiped up which would still have caused the back of the leather to break down. He did state there was a stain on the cushion in that area but the rest of the seat seemed fine.

I'll find out more when it's done.

Yeah if there was a stain that makes sense. Than it is a spill.

Matt - If he can match it up with some mellohide or something, you'll like it WAY better than real leather.

Lots of hot rod guys use it (Chip Foose being one). It's a nice product, and WAY more durable than leather.

I would consider something different if it were the whole seat but it's just the bottom section of one side.

you have no Idea what kind of chemical could have been spilled back there? My neighbor spilled some chemical on his toyotas seat and after 3 months, the whole seat looked like it had been set on fire. It was a back seat though. And he doesn't care, so I guess I shouldn't. But yeah, leather is super expensive if you buy it new from the factory. They go out and kill a cow to get it.
