Well, I'm not quite sure yet, I haven't yet thoroughly inspected the turbo, but it seems as though it's a bit unhealthy. I'm getting oil smoke from the turbo after the car warms up a little bit. I'm not sure if it's making good boost (since my intercooler leaks as well, I can't really trust my boost gauge at this point).

Assuming my RB20DET turbo is blown, I need a replacement fast. I'm looking at either an RB25DET turbo, if I can find one, or a T3/T04E Stage III 57trim, .50A/R compressor, .63A/R turbine, with an internal wastegate. From what I gather, it bolts right up (having the same bolt patterns and everything) and the oil and water lines shouldn't be too difficult to figure out.

My question is, how safe is it to just bolt such a turbo on (the T3/T04E) and drive around without any fuel tuning whatsoever?? Tuning is certainly in the very near future, but I need the car driving now. This is a stock RB20DET motor with a Walbro 255lph pump and an FMIC (30" x 5" x 2"). Can I bolt that turbo on and drive the car for a while without worrying about blowing something up??

youll be fine.. just keep the boost at a moderate level.. i put my t3/t4 with the external gate... and 10psi and i was ok.. on my rb25.. so you should be ok.

Yeah I don't have a boost controller yet, I definitely wouldn't increase the boost until I'm able to tune it anyway.

Another question, the turbo I'm looking at doesn't include an internal wastegate, but it'll work for an internal or external setup. Assuming the wastegate on my stock turbo is fine, can I use that??

I just ordered that same turbo w/external gate. I would not just bolt on that turbo with no tuning. It is going to flow a LOT more air then the previous turbo at the same psi levels. I would recommend an safc and some tuning at least; but that requires a dyno or a wideband.

If I were to go with an RB25DET turbo, what sort of gains could I expect? I'm thinking, if the stock T3/T25 on the RB20 maxes out at around 250HP, and the stock (T3/T28??) turbo on the RB25DET maxes out at 320 or whatever it is, then I could probably bolt the RB25 turbo on my RB20 and see close to 300WHP, with some decent tuning??

Plus it'd probably be more safer to use the RB25 slug with no tuning than that T3/T04E...

Yes you'd be safer with the rb25 turbo, but 300whp seems doubtful with it unless you had some work done to the turbo or a lot of other supporting mods.

When you bolt the turbo on and keep it at 6psi it won't make a HUGE diffrence in power. Your Computer should beable to give it enough fuel. Now if you go higher your on your own lol.
