Hey guys,

I think I'm finally going to sell my I and get a G coupe.

I'm not a big roller like the rest of you, so I'm looking at possibly getting one with a salvage title that's been restored.

Any advice?

If I go that route instead of buying a comparable clean titled one, I'll save between $8k-$10k.

Will banks finance a salvage?

I am a banker and banks usually will not lend on slavage titles. Most won't anyway some might.

As for the rest of your question I have no idea. I would never buy a salvage title vehicle so I wouldn't know where to begin with advice.

Good luck.

Would you buy a vehicle that was in the Katrina Flood?

My advise is drive what you can afford.

Automobiles are depreciating pieces of metal. I drove VW's for 30 years until I was able to afford my previous 92 Lexus ES300 5 sp manual. I had that for 14 years & prior to that I had an 88 Mazda 929 5 speed for 17 years. I got 246k on the VW Rabbit Diesel, over 200k on the Mazda and over 100k on the Lexus.Go get a Honda Civic for 10 - 15 years while you save some money.Just my opinion

Ooops I didn't read your signature. 270k, I'm impressed!

I recently read that if you build a vehicle with parts from many other vehicles it may be exempt from certain vehicle rules and emissions etc. You may want to check that out?The big problem with a salvage vehicle is the possible nightmare of electrical problems if the vehicle was involved in a flood.

Interesting. Where did you read that?

CA DMV says that you are stuck with your emissions requirements no matter what. Engine swaps are frowned upon.

I'm hoping for a fender bender that the insurance company didn't want to deal with and just deemed salvaged.

Yep! Cali pretty much frowns upon anything you do to the car... But we do it anyways! and that must've been one crazy fender bender to be deemed a salvage! also, have you looked at a carfax history for the vehicle? It doesn't always give you specifics, but sometimes it gives you some detail on why it might've been salvaged. Personally I'd stay away from salvaged titles...

There are two companies out here that specialize in luxury salvage restorations.

I'll definately get details before committing to anything and take it for a mean spin too.

I could get one from an auction for about $17500 out the door, but I don't think I can test drive it and saving another 2-5k sounds really nice right now.

The car will have to be in really great shape for me to buy it and I'll be taking it to a body shop to get the frame looked at prior to buying it.
